Potter, Mooibroek named OUA athletes of the week
Burlington, Ont. – Emma Potter and Sam Mooibroek have been named OUA athletes of the week, fueled by Milk2Go Sport, for the period ending March 19, 2023.
Emma Potter, Hockey, Toronto
While the Varsity Blues women’s hockey team didn’t come away with the national title this past weekend, they did see a starring performance from defender Emma Potter.
A second-year rearguard from Angus, Ont., Potter scored three goals and added on assist for the top-seeded Toronto en route to their fifth-place finish on the national stage in Montreal. Potter’s breakout tournament saw her score in all three games, beginning with the team’s second goal of their quarterfinal matchup with Mount Royal. While the go-ahead goal didn’t stand, it did start a string of scoring for the sophomore blueliner.
Her next such effort came with her side already ahead, as Potter netted an important insurance tally that helped Toronto secure a spot in the consolation final. In that season-ending contest, the kinesiology major would use a wrap-around goal to help seal the deal on the team’s fifth-place result and with a two-point outing in tow, would earn player of the game honours for the OUA champions.
Prior to her four-point weekend, Potter recorded two goals and 10 assists through 26 regular season games this year.
Sam Mooibroek, Curling, Wilfrid Laurier
Sam Mooibroek led the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's curling team to a second consecutive U SPORTS / Curling Canada University Championship gold medal this past week, marking their fourth national title in program history.
Mooibroek finished third in cumulative percentage throughout seven games of pool play during the week, shooting 75%, while also earning a +4 rating. The second-year arts student continued his tremendous play into the playoffs, where he shot 76% in both the semifinal against Queen's and the gold medal game versus Dalhousie. In the team's semifinal game against the Gaels, his shot on the last throw of the game scored four points to complete the team's comeback after conceding six points the end prior to go down by a pair.
In nine games over five days, the Kitchener, Ont. local led the Laurier rink to an 8-1 record, and based on his individual performance, earned the first-team all-Canadian skip award.
