By the Numbers: Germain leads Algoma to first win of the season
Burlington, Ont. - Numbers from across the Week 16 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) slate featured a team-leading performance that anchored Algoma's first win, a collection of career-best outings, and a league-leading shutout for Nipissing's netminder.
69 – There was no easing back in for Luke Richardson between the pipes this past week, as he faced a flurry of activity in the Gaels back-to-back with Nipissing. The Queen's netminder turned away 37 shots in a 4-2 win on Friday and followed that up with another 32 saves – and a spotless shootout – in a 4-3 win on Saturday. All told, Richardson's 69 saves and .932 save percentage were keys to an all-around winning weekend for the Tricolour.
47.5 – It was a huge weekend for Nipissing's Jackson Young, posting a pair of dominant performances in his team's back-to-back 3-1 wins over Brock. He began the two-match stretch with 17 kills and 21.5 points and followed that up on Sunday with a sparkling 20 kills and 26 points. The third-year outside hitter anchored the Lakers with his 47.5 combined points and helped them come home with a pair of road wins.
32 – After pouring in 31 points earlier in the season, Rachel Farwell outdid herself in the Bold's first taste of 2023 play with yet another career high outing. The veteran forward finished the game with 32 points to anchor TMU's convincing win over the previously undefeated Guelph Gryphons, knocking down 12 of 20 shots from the field, including five of 10 from downtown.
20.5 – Brock women's volleyball continues to roll and with performances like they got from Sadie Dick this past weekend, it isn't hard to see why. The Badgers right side was instrumental in the team's four set win against Nipissing on Saturday afternoon. Backed by 16 kills and a .538 hitting percentage for the match, Dick was able to set a new career high in points with 20.5 and, in doing so, helped keep Brock's record unblemished on the year.
19 – It was a winning weekend for Algoma men's basketball following the holiday break, as the Thunderbirds took down Laurentian to earn their first win of the season. It was a team effort in the 89-65 victory, as four players produced double-digit scoring, including a team-high 19 points from second-year Johan Germain.
4 – With her 19-save performance against York on Saturday, Nipissing's Chantelle Sandquist bookended her holiday break with another shutout, her fourth of the season for the Lakers. Not only did the stingy performance ensure that now half of her wins on the year have come via the goose egg, it also put her in sole possession of the OUA lead in that category.
