Banner Season: McMaster breaks tie in final end to claim 2023 title
Oshawa, Ont. (via Ontario Tech Ridgebacks) – The McMaster Marauders are the 2023 OUA women's curling champions.
After a 3-1 run through the round-robin, McMaster picked up wins over Western and Queen's en route to the final.
A steal of one by the Laurentian Voyageurs, the victors the last time the championship was hosted in Oshawa, got the finale underway. McMaster then blanked a pair of ends before another Voyageurs steal in the fourth put them down 2-0 at the break.
The eventual champions bounced back with a deuce in the fifth. Laurentian and Mac then traded singles in six and seven, setting up a 3-3 tie going into the eighth and final end.
The Marauders stole their way to victory, picking up a single point to win their first OUA women’s curling championship since 2020 and fourth overall.
In the bronze medal game, which had a berth to the national championship on the line, the TMU Bold held on to beat the Queen's Gaels.
Down two in the eighth, the Gaels had a shot to tie the game and send it to and extra end, but only scored a single point as they fell 6-5 to TMU. TMU has had success at the championship hosted by Ontario Tech, last winning silver in 2017.
Now McMaster, Laurentian (host), and TMU will play in the U SPORTS national championship in Sudbury in March.
