
Banner Season: Ravens, Thunderwolves produce plenty of podium results en route to titles
Huntsville, Ont. (via Waterloo Warriors) – The top Ontario university Nordic skiers took to the trails for the past three days at Arrowhead Provincial Park in Huntsville with the Carleton Ravens women’s team claiming the OUA title for the fifth time in six seasons while on the men’s side the Lakehead Thunderwolves won their second straight championship banner.
On the opening day of racing, it was all Carleton in the Freestyle Race as the top four finishers were Ravens. Bronwyn Williams led the way for the red and black, winning the gold in the 7.5km race in a time of 20:54.5 while Maggie McCLure came in second, closely behind in 21:16.4. Rounding out the top three was Helen McCulligh with her time of 21:19.8. In the men’s Freestyle Race, it was Erikson Moore from the T-Wolves who took the gold with a time of 17:29.3 while Aidan Kirkham from the Ottawa Gee-Gees crossed the line for the silver medal with his time of 17:30.8. Conor Mcgoven from Lakehead got the bronze with a time of 18:21.5.
On day two it was another sweep of the podium for Carleton on the women’s side in the Classic Start. McClure came out on top with the gold with a time of 52:37.1 with Katherine Mason finished second, and Williams third. In the men’s Classic Start, Alex Maycock of the Nipissing Lakers just crossed before Moore of Lakehead in a thrilling finish at the line. Maycock’s time was 43:12.2 while Moore was a millisecond behind at 43:12.3. Winning the bronze was Mcgoven with his second third place finish of the championship.
In the final day of competition, it was the Team Relay Race with both Carleton women and Lakehead men cementing their gold medal positioning. The Carleton A women’s team finished the relay race in a time of 28:13.3 while Carleton B came in second in a time of 28:36.1. It was the hosts Waterloo Warriors who earned a thrilling bronze medal with their time of 29:49.1 In the men’s event, Lakehead A won the gold earning a time of 24:41.1 while Ottawa A collected the silver, crossing with a time of 24:57.4. The bronze went to the Nipissing A team with a time of 25:03.8.
