After a sensational 2021-22 season that saw her take home an OUA athlete of the year selection, Guelph's Sadie-Jane Hickson started off her follow-up campaign on the right foot.
Headlining an impressive list of Gryphon performances at the 2022 OUA Cross Country Championships, Hickson finished first in the field of 92 runners overall. With six of her teammates also finishing among the top 14 racers on the day, the Oakwood, Ont. native topped the talent-laden field with her time of 29:26. Her first-place finish anchored a sensational team score of 21, which was 48 points clear of their next closest competitors.
By finishing first overall, bettering her 2021 performance wherein she just missed out on the podium (4th overall), the senior public health masters student becomes just the 10th different women's cross country runner in program history to take home the OUA most valuable runner honours, and second in a row after her teammate, Kiana Gibson, did so in 2021.
Max Turek, Cross Country, McMaster

The McMaster Marauders dominated the men's race at the OUA Cross Country Championships this past weekend, and headlining the team's podium sweep, was Max Turek.
The fifth-year Marauder continued his fine form this season to cross the finish line first and earn individual gold for the third time this season after previously topping the podium at both the Vigars & Salter Western Invitational and Marauder Bayfront Open. His time of 24:36 on the eight-kilometre course was a mere six seconds off the course record and helped earn McMaster its second straight OUA gold medal at the event.
The mechatronics engineering and management student finished five seconds ahead of teammate and second-place finisher, Andrew Davies, and 17 seconds clear of the closest non-McMaster runner. Led by Turek's performance, the maroon machine saw all five scoring athletes finish in the top eight in a field of 102 competitors to claim the title and bring gold back to Hamilton for the first time since 2018.
Stephen Harris, Rowing, Brock

With racing aplenty at the Royal Canadian Henley Rowing Course on Saturday, a member of the championship-winning Brock men's team was a standout for his St. Catharines squad.
Stephen Harris, a Guelph, Ont. product and third-year economics student, was at the forefront of his team's banner season triumph. Following a strong season in which he posted podium results at the Western Invitational, Head of the Trent, and Head of the Charles, Harris added two more top finishes to his tally, taking home double gold on Saturday. The first came alongside Thomas Markewich in the men's lightweight 2x, as the duo finished in a time of 6:59.540 to top the field by almost nine seconds. For an encore, Harris joined the men's lightweight 8+ crew and proceeded to cross the line first in a golden time of 6:11.440.
For his efforts to help Brock capture their second consecutive OUA title, Harris was also named the conference's rower of the year.
