Hirtle, Frattaroli, Conn named OUA athletes of the week
Cassidy Hirtle, Basketball, Wilfrid Laurier
Cassidy Hirtle made a splash on the scoreboard across Wilfrid Laurier's two games this past weekend.
In tough against the fourth-ranked team in the country on Friday, Hirtle produced a career-best performance for the Hawks. The second-year guard posted a game-high, and personal best, 31 points against Queen's to keep the purple and gold in the game throughout. As part of the offensive explosion, which accounted for 46% of her team's point production for the game, Hirtle also set new benchmarks with 11 made field goals and six makes from beyond the arc. She would also add three rebounds in the loss.
In Laurier's final home game of the 2022, meanwhile, Hirtle went right back to work in front of the home fans. Looking to cap off the semester's home slate in winning fashion, the team once again turned to the economics major for her sensational scoring touch against Ontario Tech. Hirtle shone in the starring role with another 28 points, while matching her season-high with five rebounds and forcing two steals. It was an efficient outing for Hirtle as well, as she went 9-for-15 from the field, including making five of her six attempts from deep.
With those two high-scoring games in tow, the Sarnia, Ont. product soars into the OUA's top-five in scoring, boosting her season average to 18.8 points per contest.
Brandon Frattaroli, Hockey, McGill
Brandon Frattaroli was a prominent producer for the McGill Redbirds this weekend, earning points on five of his team's eight goals during that stretch.
The high-octane weekend started with a two-point outing on Friday against Carleton. As part of a busy second period against the Ravens, the second-year centre assisted on McGill's second goal of the game before finding the back of the net himself just four minutes later. The multi-point effort wasn't enough to get the Redbirds the win, as they ultimately fell 5-4 in a shootout, but Frattaroli would ensure the story ended differently the following night.
Tasked with another tough matchup on Saturday, McGill went down 1-0 early against the second-place Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. From there, the industrial and labour relations student from Pierrefonds, Que. took over. He would even the score just under four minutes after the Ridgebacks' opener and would give his team the lead with what proved to be the game-winner late in the second. He would complete the natural hat trick halfway through the final frame and all but seal the deal on McGill's 4-1 win.
The four-goal weekend, which helped the Redbirds secure three of a possible four points on the weekend, doubles Frattaroli's output on the year and catapults him into a tie for eighth in the conference in both goals and points on the year.
Patrick Conn, Water Polo, Toronto
Patrick Conn, along with the rest of his Toronto men's water polo team, entered the OUA's final fall championship with one goal in mind, and he played an integral part in helping his team fulfill those banner season aspirations.
All eyes were on the Blues at the OUA Water Polo Championship, as they were looking for a sixth straight provincial banner to mark the most successful stretch in their program's history. The top-seeded squad saw their first action in a semifinal tilt with Western, and Conn led his team to an offensive masterclass. Anchored by five goals from the Piedmont, California product, the Blues produced a lopsided 28-3 win over the Mustangs to punch their ticket to the finale.
As an encore, this time coming in a familiar gold medal matchup with Carleton, the third-year history and philosophy student outdid himself. He would eclipse his performance from the previous match with a dazzling seven-goal outing against the Ravens. The talented wing was a force all game long in leading his Toronto side to another convincing 24-4 win and was named the conference's most valuable player as a result.
