
Banner Season: Blues jump out to big lead after opening day in the pool
London, Ont. (via Western Mustangs) – Toronto's Aleksa Gold & Gabe Mastromatteo have multiple gold medal performances on Day 1 of the OUA swimming championships and the Varsity Blues lead on both the women's and men’s team standings.
WOMEN’S RESULTS:
The Varsity Blues took gold medals in 5 of the 7 events on the night including the 200 Free, 50m Back, 100m Fly, 400 IM & 4x100 Medley Relay.
Gold led two U of T sweeps of the podium on the night including winning her third career 200 freestyle gold medal in 1:58.54. Lily Chubaty was second in 2:01.26 and Claire Howard was third in 2:02.38.
Not long after, Gold followed that up with a victory in the women’s 50 backstroke in 28.40. Chubaty claimed her second silver medal of the night in 28.70 seconds, while Angelica Bath was third in 29.07 seconds.
The OUA record was set in the 100m breaststroke when Western’s Shona Branton finished with a time of 1:08.19 to take the gold medal, Toronto’s Madeline Spencer finished second at 1:08.61 & fellow Mustang Megan Deering took gold with a final time of 1:08.86.
McMaster was the only other school to take home a gold medal on the day when they opened the evening session by taking a gold medal in the 4x50 Free Relay.
Toronto took a total of 14 medals on the day while Western picked up four with McMaster and Guelph each taking a single medal.
Toronto holds an over 100-point lead after the first day of competition.
MEN’S RESULTS:
The Varsity Blues also had a dominant performance on the Men’s side of the championship, taking gold in all but one competition. 2020 Olympian Gabe Mastromatteo won three gold medals on the night (100m Breast, 4x50 Free Relay, & 4x100 Medley Relay).
Fellow Varsity Blue Carter Buck picked up a pair of medals on day one including gold medals in the 50m Backstroke and he was also part of the 4x100 Medley Relay who also took gold.
The Warriors took the top two spots on the podium in the 400 IM when Alex Boden finished with a gold medal time of 54.38, followed by teammate Lukas Wormald at 54.45. Kent Goni Avila of Laurier rounded out the podium.
In total, the Varsity Blues picked up nine medals followed by Western & Waterloo with four, Waterloo with three, McMaster with two and Laurier & Queen’s with single medals.
