
Desouza, Mazzotta, Smail named OUA athletes of the week

The offence was flowing for the black and gold this weekend in a pair of season-ending matchups with Algoma, and Waterloo's Samantha Desouza made the most of it.
Entering the team's final two games, the second-year native of Brampton, Ont. had netted two goals to for the Warriors on the season, but that all changed with a flurry of tallies against the Thunderbirds. Desouza started her weekend by netting the opener in the Saturday contest before doubling that with another goal seven minutes later. In the second half, the arts and business student put home another pair of goals to bring her total to four for the game.
She didn't stop there; however, as Desouza continued to find the back of the net on Sunday. After seeing her team go up 1-0 early, the Waterloo midfielder chipped in with two more goals in quick succession, just seven minutes apart, along with an assist to put the Warriors in the driver's seat once again and secure their second straight win to close out the year.
Desouza's scoring total rose to eight goals on the year, putting her in the OUA's top 10 as a result.

If you blink, you may have missed Scott Mazzotta's contributions to the Ravens' two wins this weekend, but they were substantial nonetheless, as he found the back of the net on multiple occasions.
The Ottawa, Ont. native scored one of the fastest hat tricks you'll ever see, netting a trio of goals across a four-minute stretch in Carleton's 6-0 win over Trent on Saturday. With tallies in the seventh, eighth, and 11th minute, respectively, the business major had the Ravens soaring to victory with an other-worldly start to the game. If that wasn't enough, the senior forward netted his fourth goal of the weekend as part of a lopsided win over their fellow top-10 combatants from TMU. His marker in the 53rd minute put the black birds up by three and all but sealed the deal on their victorious regular season finale.
With these sparkling final performances in tow, Mazzotta wraps up the regular season with nine goals, good for third in the OUA scoring race.
Jaedyn Smail, Lacrosse, Queen's

The Queen's Gaels capped off their lacrosse championship aspirations in fine form this past weekend, and were able to overcome their conference competitors thanks in large part to award-winner Jaedyn Smail.
The Toronto, Ont. native began the championship with a strong showing in the team's two round robin tilts, collecting six goals and two assists therein to help her team take the top seed into the ensuing semifinal matchup. In that penultimate game against Guelph, Smail was once again a focal point on offence, collecting a hat trick and an assist as part of the Gaels' 10-2 win.
Even with these impressive performances in tow, the biomechanical engineering major saved her best for last. Smail was instrumental in Queen's gold medal rematch against Trent, as the third-year midfielder was key to the team's 16-5 championship win thanks to her seven points therein, including a remarkable six goals for the Tricolour.
For her efforts at the OUA finale, Smail was also named the conference's most valuable offensive player and an all-star.
