Gates, Falardeau, Faust named OUA athletes of the week
Sarah Gates, Basketball, McMaster
It was a record-setting weekend for Sarah Gate, as the McMaster guard re-wrote the program's history books with an explosive offensive display for the Marauders.
Gates has been one of the top talents in the conference throughout her varsity tenure, and after topping the OUA in scoring a season ago, the Newmarket, Ont. product has gone right back to work in the early part of the 2022-23 campaign. In just the second week of the regular season, Gates produced two eye-popping performances, the first of which earned her top spot on the Marauders all-time single-game scoring list.
In the team's Friday night win over York, the senior studying human behaviour registered 47 points for the maroon machine, accumulating the mark on 18-for-27 shooting from the field and seven made threes. The sensation scoring performance put her ahead of former Marauder Lindsay DeGroot (43 points; 2008) in the team's record books and bested her own career high by nine points.
The production wouldn't stop there; however, as her scoring touch continued into the team's Saturday tilt with Queen's. And although the Hamilton squad came up just shy against the undefeated Gaels, Gates did everything she could to secure a strong result with another 34-point outing. She once again shot the lights out from behind the arc, going 5-for-7 in the game, while also pacing her team with seven rebounds.
The emphatic weekend puts the McMaster standout's average about 30 points per game for the young season and ranked in the top-five in field goal percentage (54.1).
Evan Falardeau, Volleyball, Toronto
It was a memorable week for the Varsity Blues volleyball team, and as part of their historic games on the court, they received a starring effort from Evan Falardeau.
In a four-set win over York, one that featured one of the most incredible sets of competition in OUA and U SPORTS history, the fourth-year left side was instrumental in securing Toronto's result. With 31 points in the match, including the kill that ended the lengthy 46-44 fourth set, Falardeau was a fixture on the attack. He ended the thriller with 25 kills, 11 digs, four aces, one solo block, and two block assists.
It was much of the same in the encore for Falardeau and the Blues. While it took a fifth set to secure the win on Saturday in their second-straight rivalry game, the team added to the win column nonetheless, with Falardeau nearly matching his output from the night before. In this one, the political science major from Stratford, Ont. registered 24 kills, 10 digs, three aces, two solo blocks, and a block assist, all as part of a 29.5-point performance against TMU.
All-told, Falardeau accounted for 60.5 of his team's 136 points (44.5%) during his unstoppable two-game stretch.
Kobe Faust, Rugby, Guelph
After producing an all-star campaign for Guelph during the regular season, Kobe Faust continued to shine on the championship stage to help his side end their conference schedule on a winning note.
Much like he was on 19 occasions during the regular season, Faust was in fine form on his convert attempts on Sunday afternoon, as he was able to follow up on each of his team's tries with those ever-important two points. The Uxbridge, Ont. product, who missed the team's championship run a season ago after an injury forced him to the sidelines, was flawless in his kicking duties on the day. The marketing management major connected on three convert attempts on Guelph's trio of first half tries, before finishing off his perfect 4-for-4 day with his final convert midway through the latter frame, despite some off-and-on snowy and windy conditions throughout the game.
In what wrapped up as a nine-point win for Guelph (28-19), Faust's eight-point contribution was instrumental in helping his side keep the Hawks at arm's length and come through with their second straight Turner Trophy overall.
