Gellner, Campoli named OUA athletes of the week
Lauren Gellner, Soccer, Windsor Lancers
Nothing was getting past Windsor goalkeeper Lauren Gellner this weekend. The fourth-year Lancer was a brick wall against the Brock Badgers in the teams' two meetings, turning aside all 16 shots on goal across the two matches, both of which ended in 1-0 wins for Windsor.
It wasn't for lack of trying in either of the games that Brock was held off the scoresheet, as the St. Catharines squad threw plenty of shots at Gellner across the 180 minutes of play. In their first meeting, Gellner turned away a season-high 10 shots to anchor the slim victory. In their encore, it was more of the same, with the human kinetics major denying all six Brock shots on goal, including a clutch penalty kick early in the second half to help secure her third clean sheet of the season.
The Dorchester, Ont. native now sits second in the conference with 31 saves.
Chris Campoli, Soccer, Ontario Tech Ridgebacks
The sizzling start to the season continued for Chris Campoli this past weekend, as his offensive arsenal was on full display in back-to-back wins against the Excalibur.
While it was a more modest start on the scoresheet to Campoli's weekend, his second half tally against Trent on Friday night was still a memorable once. The 52nd minute marker was his 21st goal for the Ridgebacks, ranking him first overall in program history. The Woodbridge, Ont. native accomplished the feat in his 26th game with the Oshawa squad, but he outdid himself in a big way in his 27th career tilt.
In what proved to be a lopsided victory for the visiting Ridgebacks over Trent, the junior midfielder studying finance opened the scoring just two minutes in. He would then net his second of the game before the game was 10 minutes old before registering the hat trick tally prior to the end of the half. He would add his fourth of the game - and fifth of the weekend - in the 55th minute to cap off his impressive outing.
Campoli now sits alone atop the OUA goal scorers with seven on the season in just three games played.
