Combining the adrenaline of a new season with back-to-back games against your cross-town rival is enough to get any student-athlete fired up for the year, and for Wilfrid Laurier's Sasha Marikano, she turned that excitement into on-field success in her team's two weekend wins.
The second-year forward from Kitchener, Ont. got her season off to a blistering start en route to Laurier coming away with a full six points from their Battle of Waterloo derby against the Warriors. In the first game, Marikano opened the scoring at Warrior Field just 1:40 into the match and it would stand as the eventual game-winner in the 2-0 victory. She set the offensive tone again on Sunday in the Hawks' home opener, giving Laurier a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. She would provide further insurance with her second goal of the game in the 38th minute in what would wrap up as a 4-1 win for the purple and gold.
Leading the way offensively, a feat that also featured six shots on target, the sensational striker's three goals across the home-and-home have her sitting atop the OUA goal-scoring leaderboard and her team at 2-0 for the first time since 2015.

While Marikano anchored two wins for the Laurier women, it was Sebastian Guerrieri and the Warriors men's side that claimed back-to-back wins in their season-opening Battle of Waterloo.
The senior forward was masterful up front in what was a dominant offensive showing from the black and gold across their first two tilts. After the Warriors opened the scoring in the first minute of their season opener, Guerrieri was quick to double the lead with a tally just three minutes later. It wouldn't be long before the honours business major would add to his total, as he notched his second of the game in the 31st minute, en route to a blowout 7-2 win for the home side.
While the overall scoring wasn't quite as rampant in the encore, as evidenced by the scoreless first half, Guerrieri was able to find his scoring touch yet again. He netted two goals just seven minutes apart (60th, 67th) to open up the second half and ultimately help secure the 3-0 win for Waterloo.
Guerrieri's four-goal weekend ranks him as the early leader in the OUA scoring race.
