
Banner Season York, Western sail to semifinals with undefeated pool play
Toronto, Ont. (via TMU Bold) – The semifinals are set for championship Sunday after an entertaining Day 2 at the 2023 OUA Badminton Championship.
Western topped Pool A with a 3-0 record – after a revision to Friday’s final tie saw them defeat Toronto rather than draw – and received a bye right through to the semifinal.
York topped Pool B, closing out their pool play with a 4-0 record with a 9-1 win over McMaster on Saturday to also earn a bye to the semifinal.
In crossover action, the 3-1 Waterloo Warriors faced off against the 1-2 Ottawa Gee-Gees. The Warriors won the first six matches to claim the tie and advance to Sunday’s semifinal where they’ll take on Western.
The 2-1 Toronto Varsity Blues took on the 2-2 McMaster Marauders and the defending champions earned a tight 6-4 decision to advance to the semifinal where they will meet York.
In consolation action, the 0-3 Guelph Gryphons played the 0-4 Ontario Tech Ridgebacks for the right to play for seventh place. The Gryphons earned an 8-2 victory to advance to Sunday’s seventh place tie against the host TMU Bold who finished with a 1-3 pool play record.
The semifinals and seventh place game will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning while the fifth place, bronze medal, and championship matches are slated to begin at 1 p.m.
