OUA announces championship schedule for 2022-23 season
2022-23 OUA Championships Schedule | FULL
The first banners to be awarded this season will come on the courts, as the OUA Tennis Championships take place from October 7th to 9th. Hosted by the York Lions at Mayfair Club East in Toronto, competing schools will be looking to ace the first test on the season's championship docket.
A pair of competitions will follow suit over the course of the next weekend, as champions for both golf and baseball are decided. Prior to crowning the champion on the diamond on October 16th, however, the OUA baseball contingent will first compete in the regional qualifiers from October 8th to 9th, with the four respective winners therein playing for the conference title that following weekend. While this format will match that of the previous season for baseball, there will be no qualifiers for golf for 2022, instead reverting back to past championship-only renditions. In this latest edition, the Ottawa Gee-Gees will welcome teams to the Hylands Golf Club from October 14th to 16th.
Lacrosse will stand alone the following weekend, from October 21st to 23rd, as the Toronto Varsity Blues prepare to host the three-day championship festivities in the provincial capital in the month's penultimate weekend of Banner Season action.
While a specific date for the OUA Rowing Championships, hosted by the Guelph Gryphons, is still to be determined, the racing spirit will still get a chance to shine as part of the final weekend of October. Hosted by the Western Mustangs at the Thames Valley Golf Course for a second consecutive season, schools will be tasked with navigating that familiar terrain at the OUA Cross Country Championships on October 29th.
Several schools will be racing for glory on the course, but in the day's additional two championship endeavors, it will be a head-to-head format to determine the champions in what marks the first in a string of league sport finales. With a single game set up for each, the remaining two teams in both field hockey and women's rugby will compete for the right to raise their respective OUA titles in their gold medal matches, with the host for each to be determined based on the final participants.
Similarly, the season's best of the best from the beautiful game will be the only ones left standing when the OUA Soccer Championships get decided on November 5th, with the final matches also being hosted by the highest remaining seed on both the women's and men's sides, respectively.
The OUA Men's Rugby Championship will be decided on November 12th, two weeks following the conclusion of their women's counterpart on the conference front, but it won't be the only trophy being raised that day. In fact, it will be North America's oldest football trophy that will also be handed out, as the final two gridiron giants kick-off the 114th Yates Cup on that same Saturday.
The fall's final championship entry will come in the pool, McMaster's IWC Pool to be specific, as the Marauders close out the semester's Banner Season slate by hosting the OUA Men's Water Polo Championship from November 26th to 27th.
Turning the page to the following semester, it will be the women's curling finale that gets the winter festivities underway. The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks will take on the hosting honours to kick off that latest stretch of Banner Season fun, welcoming teams to the Oshawa Golf & Curling Centre from February 3rd to 5th. The details of the men's edition are still to be determined.
That second weekend in February will be a busy one; however, as another three championship events will also be featured therein. Hoping to make a splash in the pool will be the contingent of conference swimmers heading to Western University for the OUA Swimming Championships from February 9th to 11th. Just a day behind, from February 10th to 12th, the Queen's Gaels will host the OUA Squash Championships, while the McMaster Marauders help round out the weekend by welcoming the OUA Wrestling Championships to Hamilton on February 11th.
The ice will once again be calling just a couple days later with the OUA Figure Skating Championship and it will be the Carleton Ravens seeing the rest of the conference competitors flock to the nation's capital for that two-day outing (February 13th to 14th). Coming out of that mid-week meet-up, OUA teams will be making a racquet at Toronto Metropolitan University as part of the OUA Badminton Championship from February 17th to 19th.
Championship competition will diverge from the head-to-head variety and into the racing realm after that, with the Waterloo Warriors hosting the OUA Nordic Skiing Championships from February 21st to 24th at Arrowhead Provincial Park in Huntsville, followed by the Windsor Lancers hosting the Track & Field Championships from February 24th to 25th to finish off the month.
Attention will then be focused on the hardwood when the calendar flips to March, as the Critelli Cup and Wilson Cup winners will be crowned on March 4th, both of which will be hosted by the highest remaining seed of the two participating teams.
It will be a similar formula for the final weekend of provincial play (March 11th), as the remaining four league sport titles will be claimed as part of an action-packed conference conclusion. On the courts, fans will witness the Quigley and Forsyth Cup Championships, respectively, as the victors in women's and men's volleyball are decided. At the rinks, it will be the McCaw Cup Women's Hockey Championship making its way to the ice that same day, along with the 111th edition of the Queen's Cup to crown a men's hockey champion.
Along with men's curling, still to be determined are both the Women's Fencing Championship and Men's Fencing Championship, which will be updated when final dates are confirmed.
