Banner Season: Varsity Blues, Warriors lead after opening individual matches
St. Catharines, Ont. (via Brock Badgers) – More than 250 fencers from 13 universities converged on Brock University’s Ian Beddis Gymnasium to compete in the 2023 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Fencing Championships on Friday, February 17.
The Toronto Varsity Blues led the women’s standings with 134 points after the first day of competition follow by the Western Mustangs (88) and the Carleton Ravens (48).
For the men, the Waterloo Warriors sit in first with 100 points ahead of Toronto (60) and Queen’s (46).
Ava Zheng of the Carleton Ravens defeated Nicole Su of Toronto by a score of 15-11 to win gold in the individual women’s epee final. The third-place match featured Toronto’s Anna Maria Mucsi defeating Joanna Kasprzak 15-13 for bronze.
In the individual women’s sabre final, Janna Elshakankiri of Toronto overcame Lily Liu of Western 15-11 to win gold. Queen’s Caroline Whitehead claimed bronze by defeating Wing Ka Ariana Tang 15-11.
Jiaan Li of the Waterloo Warriors outlasted Steven Zhang of the Western Mustangs by a score of 15-12 to capture the Charles Walters Trophy as individual men’s foil champion in the final. Ottawa’s Sacha Vasiliev edged David Chen-Li of Toronto 15-8 for bronze in the third-place contest.
In the individual men's sabre final, Richard Yang of Waterloo took down Carleton’s Daniel Manyoki 15-12 to win the Schwende Trophy. Waterloo’s Ryoto Miyake claimed bronze by defeating Filbert Yung 15-8.
The three-day event continues with individual women’s foil, men’s epee, men’s foil team relay and women’s sabre team relay on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 8:30 a.m.
