
Banner Season: Toronto tops all four podiums as part of Day 2 dominance
St. Catharines, Ont. (via Brock Badgers) – The Toronto Varsity Blues have taken the lead in both the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Fencing Championships at Brock University on Saturday, February 18.
On Day 2 of competition, the Varsity Blues (188 points) men’s team won gold in both the individual men’s epee and men’s foil team relay to score 128 points and overtake the Waterloo Warriors (163) atop of the overall men’s standings. Western remains in third with 131.
The Toronto women’s team (258) maintained their lead over second-place Western (199). Queen’s (102) moved into third.
The second day featured the conclusion of the individual events with men’s epee and women’s foil, including the start of the team relay events in men’s foil and women’s sabre.
In the individual women’s foil, Catherine Wu of Toronto defeated TMU’s Erika Dominguez by a score of 15-13 in the gold-medal match. Serena Fang of Western claimed bronze with 15-10 win over RMC’s Stephanie Leach.
Colin McCurdy of Toronto held off Brock’s Nicholas Gutierrez-Sarabia 15-11 to win the individual men’s epee gold medal. Kevin De-tai Wang of York claimed the bronze medal with a 15-12 decision over Western’s John Huang.
In the women’s sabre team relay, the Toronto Varsity Blues team of Astrid Chandler, Janna Elshakankiri, Esther Isadora Falkson and Rojina Maria Haji-Mahmoodzadeh dominated the Western Mustangs 45-36 to win gold. The Mustangs are made up of Louisa Lewicki, Lily Liu, Natalie O’Donnell and Wing Ka Ariana Tang.
The Queen’s Gaels grouping of Caroline Whitehead, Kirstin Lang, Vivian Yao and Hannah Baguib won bronze with a 45-29 win over the McMaster Marauders.
The Toronto Varsity Blues squad of David Chen-Li, Alex Lum-Debono, William Teece-Soter and Gerald Wang narrowly defeated the Waterloo Warriors 45-43 to win gold in the men’s foil team relay. The Warriors consist of Jiaan Li, Nolan White-Roy, Hidde Koerts and Avery Hilbert.
The Western Mustangs team of Steven Zhang, Leonard Cui, Xuan Ran Qi and Keshi Wang claimed bronze with a 45-39 victory over Queen’s.
Both Championships conclude with team relay events in men’s epee, women’s epee, women’s foil and men’s sabre on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 8:30 a.m.
