Banner Season: Dominant day two by host Western leads to 16th banner in program history
Aylmer, Ont. (via Western Mustangs) – For the first time since 2015, the Western Mustangs captured the OUA Figure Skating Championship banner on Wednesday afternoon at the East Elgin Community Complex.
Western took top spot in five of the six competitions on Day 2 of the championship, giving them 58 on the day and 111 total points to take the 2023 title.
“It feels so good, it’s hard to put into words,” said Mustangs Head Coach Alma Moir. “We had such a great day today, we started off the day with a win, which was kind of unexpected and then we just kept rolling.”
After having a two-point lead after day one, the Guelph Gryphons finished in second place taking the team silver medal after adding 27 points on day two, including a silver-medal finish in the synchro event.
Third place and the bronze medal went to the Toronto Varsity Blues who added 34 points to their total on day two to finish with 75 points overall.
Western co-captain Clara Campbell picked up a gold medal on day two in the gold freeskate and was part of the winning synchro team to add to her gold and silver medal from Day 1.
“Going into the competition I honestly thought yesterday would have been our strongest day, we all knew it was tight between U of T, Guelph and us so I think we did a great job of focusing today,” said Campbell. “Having this whole group together at the end and being able to have that big team photo is a great way to top off my OUA career.”
A pair of major awards were announced at the conclusion of the competition which included the Queen’s Gaels being named the Team Spirit Award winner, while Janet Gibson of the Guelph Gryphons was named Coach of the Year for the silver medallists.
