Banner Season: Another dominant day in the pool for the Varsity Blues
London, Ont. (via Western Mustangs) – It was another dominant day in the pool for the Toronto Varsity Blues, as they continue to lead both team standings through the second day of the 2023 OUA Swimming Championships.
The top three team scores after two days of competition, on the women’s side the University of Toronto leads with 831 points, followed by the host Western Mustangs with 525.5 and Guelph Gryphons at 297. Toronto also leads the men’s standings with 559.5 points, ahead of Western at 481 and Waterloo with 408.5.
WOMEN’S RESULTS:
The Varsity Blues took the top spot on the podium in all events on Friday evening.
This included five instances when they swept the podium in individual races. Claire Howard won a pair of gold medals on the night including the 400m Free and was part of the 800 Free Relay team. She wasn’t the only Varsity Blue with a multi-gold medal performance, Ainsley McMurray won the 50m Free & 50m Fly. A pair of Western Mustangs made podium finishes in the 200m Breaststroke with Ella Rennie taking silver and Megan Deering winning bronze, but they were the only other swimmers to pick up medals in the individual competitions.
In total Toronto took 17 medals on the night with Western taking three medals and Guelph with one medal, coming in the 800m Free Relay.
MEN'S RESULTS
The Varsity Blues continued a solid pace but there was a bit more variation of results across the races in the Western Student Recreation Centre (WSRC) Pool. Toronto had 5 gold medal finishes in individual competitions. The team of Max Tambling, Jacob Gallant, Ben Loewen and Quinn Matteis closed out the night winning the 800m Free Relay, which was the second medal of the night for Loewen and Matteis as they won the 200m Fly and 400 Free respectively.
Waterloo and McMaster picked up the only other two gold medals on the night. The Warriors Lukas Wormald won the 50 Fly in a time of 24.34 which was a U SPORTS qualifier time. Meanwhile, the Marauders Cameron Johnsen won gold in the 200m Breaststroke and pounded the water and gestured proudly in the shape of an M with his fingers toward his team poolside after taking the win.
The medal count for the day saw the Varsity Blues with ten, Western with four medals, York with three and McMaster & Waterloo with 2.
