Banner Season: Mustangs gallop onto the scene, Gaels remain perfect to wrap up pool play
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. - The Western Mustangs men’s team trampled the competition as they begin their title defence during Day 2 of the OUA Squash Championships at White Oaks Resort & Spa in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The Queen’s Golden Gaels women’s team improved to 2-0 as they look to defend their championship.
The Mustangs, who have won 36 consecutive provincial championships, picked apart the host Brock Badgers 7-0 and handed the Waterloo Warriors their first loss by a score of 5-2, which included a marathon battle between seconds Ravi Seth of Waterloo and David Mill of Western.
Western went up 4-0 over Waterloo before the Warrior’s Thomas Manley edged Brett Schille and Seth held a 2-0 lead before Mill made a comeback in three consecutive sets to win 3-2 (10-12, 9-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-9).
The Toronto Varsity Blues are the only undefeated team in Men’s Pool B with wins over Queen’s (6-1) and Guelph (6-1).
On the women’s side, the Gaels stormed onto the scene with back-to-back victories over Brock (7-0) and Waterloo (6-1). Queen’s number one Marlow Benson swept Harriet Ho (Waterloo) 3-0 (11-7, 11-5, 11-6) and Brock’s Andrea Chaves 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-6).
The Western women also remain undefeated with a record of 3-0 in Pool B. Western got by Toronto 5-2 and McMaster 7-0 as No. 1 Amy Commisso leads the way with a perfect record.
On Sunday, semifinal and championship matches start at 9 a.m.
