By the Numbers: New school scoring leaders take centre stage in latest week of action
1,723 – A memorable career for the two-time men’s basketball player of the year became even more noteworthy this past weekend, as Kadre Gray added another accolade to his impressive university resume. As part of the 31-point performance from the Toronto, Ont. native in his team’s win over the McMaster Marauders, Gray became Laurentian’s all-time leading scorer, registering his 1,723rd point for the Voyageurs. The feat allowed Gray to surpass the long-standing career mark of 1,722 points set by Norm Hann in 1993, while also catapulting the superstar guard into the top-10 in OUA all-time scoring.

1,516 – Another all-star career added a milestone achievement this past weekend, as Waterloo’s Nedim Hodzic also topped his school’s all-time scoring list. Thanks to his team-high 23 points against Guelph, which included the 1,516th of his career, the fourth-year forward overtook Cam McIntyre for the most points in program history. The Waterloo, Ont. native accomplished the feat in just 77 games, compared to 98 for McIntyre, but the chart-topping numbers are nothing new for Hodzic. He is also Waterloo’s all-time leader in rebounds, free throws, and field goals made.

1,000 – Maddy Horst’s full-time return to the Western Mustangs lineup has definitely not gone unnoticed this season. After dealing with injuries last year, she is set on finishing her career at Western with a bang; a notion she continued to put into practice this past weekend with a milestone mark. Thanks to a 20-point performance against Waterloo and a 21-point outing against Wilfrid Laurier, the Baden, Ont. native surpassed 1,000 career points for her career and put herself among some very elite company in the Mustangs’ history books (only two other players have accomplished the feat for the purple and white).

276 – Badgers’ goaltender Jensen Murphy continued to turn away shots at a conference-leading rate this weekend, backstopping the Brock squad to a pair of wins over Waterloo and Guelph in the process. Murphy made 27 saves to help the Badgers defeat the Warriors and followed that up with a 30-save shutout against the defending champion Gryphons. The stingy play boosted the Kingston, Ont. native to a 1.75 GAA and .944 SV%, while also putting her atop the OUA with 276 saves.

61 – The reigning OUA figure skating champions showed off their winning ways once again this past Wednesday at the OUA Fall Invitational at Carleton University. Led by fourth-year co-captain Maggie Chen, who won one gold and one bronze medal in leading the Varsity Blues figure skating team to a first-place finish at the event, Toronto finished with a combined team score of 61 points to position themselves well ahead of Western (49) and McGill (45) in the overall standings.
49 – McMaster swimmers accounted for a whopping tally of 49 individual medals at the DeBray Divisional Championships, as the Marauders women won team gold by a 303-point margin while the men out-paced the host Gryphons by 151.5 to similarly take the title. The veteran trio of Isabelle Lei, Emma Schlyter, and Veronica Nichol led the way for the Mac women with four individual medals apiece, with Lei incredibly winning three golds over the weekend. On the men's side, the Marauders were paced by the trio of Alex Tropynine, Mitch Muizelaar, and Ian Mackinnon, who each grabbed four individual medals over the course of the two-day event.

47 – You only get to make one first impression, but that foray onto the university scene was more than enough to garner Nipissing’s rookie goaltender some praise. Francis Asselin, making his first career OUA start, came up big on Saturday night against nationally-ranked Ottawa. The St-Jerome, Que. native was called upon early and often against the offensively gifted Gee-Gees, but was up to the task time and time again. All-told, Asselin made 47 saves in regulation and overtime, along with another three in the shootout, to help the Lakers pick up a 4-3 win.

40 – It was a night to remember for Telloy Simon, as the Windsor Lancers guard was electric on offence all game long. The junior led the Lancers in the opening half with 24 points on 69% shooting and kept rolling from there en route to a career-high 40 points. Telloy didn’t rest for a single minute in the Windsor win, and for good reason, as the Kitchener, Ont. native was on fire from the floor, connecting on 10 shots from beyond the arc and a sizzling 67 FG% from the floor when the final buzzer sounded.

3 – Thunderwolves third-year forward Daniel Del Paggio recorded a natural hat-trick during Friday night’s Teddy Bear Toss game against the Laurier Golden Hawks. Del Paggio scored the Thunderwolves' first goal, triggering a shower of teddy bears on the ice, before netting his second of the game on the powerplay. His third goal would go on to be the game-winner and has helped buoy his season totals to a team-best 18 points (6 G, 12 A) in 16 games played.

3 – In a field of 49 competitors in men's senior épée, RMC Paladins DJ Holtz impressively fought his way to the medal rounds to earn a third-place finish at the Western Open on the weekend. In the quarterfinals, the Kingston, Ont. native upset the third-ranked fencer in a 15-14 bout to qualify for the semis. The computer engineering student, who is in his second year with the Paladins, also surpassed many of his older teammates at the event en route to the bronze medal.
