Rams Scotten, Thunderwolves Lam earn OUA Athlete of the Week honours
Burlington, Ont. – Marin Scotten and Lock Lam have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending January 26, 2020.
Female Athlete of the Week – Marin Scotten, Ryerson Rams, Basketball
The Ryerson Rams’ top scorer continued to play a leading role for the women’s basketball team over the weekend, as Marin Scotten brought her squad right down to the wire against a pair of fellow top-five schools.
While the end results didn’t always go the way of the Rams, Scotten had plenty to celebrate in the two tough tests. In falling just short to No. 3 Ottawa on Friday, the Ottawa, Ont. native chipped in an 18-point, 10-rebound performance. Her second double-double of the season was key in the Rams’ attempt at victory, and while they ultimately lost 74-72 to the Gee-Gees, Scotten was right back at it against the Carleton Ravens a night later.
In going toe-to-toe with the Ravens, the third-year guard finished with 21 points and five boards, but no contribution was bigger than her last-second heroics. With under 30 seconds to play, Scotten grabbed an important offensive rebound to keep the ball in the hands of the Rams and went on to hit what proved to be the game-winning three-pointer with just 12 seconds left.
The clutch long ball was not only the dagger in the game, but also the icing on the cake of a strong weekend showing that leaves Scotten with team-high 2019-20 averages of 16.1 PPG and 6.8 RPG.
Male Athlete of the Week – Lock Lam, Lakehead Thunderwolves, Basketball
The block party continued up north this weekend, as Lock Lam wreaked havoc as a rim protector and all-around force for the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a pair of wins for the No. 6 squad.
The weekend opened with a stiff test, as the No. 7 Laurentian Voyageurs came to visit for a top-10 tilt. Going up against one of the best teams in the country, as well as one of the top players, requires a standout effort in many regards, which Lam provided in spades. Not only did he pour in 14 points – including four made three-balls – but he also crashed the glass for 15 boards and swatted away seven Laurentian shot attempts, tying a personal best and Lakehead single-game record in the process.
On the heels of this terrific individual outing and 73-59 win for the team, Lam and the T’Wolves welcomed Nipissing a night later. The third-year forward from Ottawa, Ont. went right back to work against the Lakers, chipping in 16 points on over 50% shooting, while also rounding out the stat line with nine rebounds and another six blocks.
The other-worldly block numbers continue to have Lam firmly atop the OUA in that regard, as he now has an average of 3.5 BPG for the season. With 13 more blocks this weekend, he was also able to surpass his own Lakehead record of 53 blocks in a campaign and has done so in eight fewer games for the now 13-3 Thunderwolves.
