Banner Season: Warriors, Blues lead the way after opening day of championship play
Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. (via Brock Badgers) - The Waterloo Warriors and Toronto Varsity Blues finished on top of the leaderboards after Day 1 of the OUA Squash Championships at White Oaks in Niagara-on-the-Lake on Feb. 7.
In Pool A, the Warriors’ women’s squad defeated the host Brock Badgers 7-0 as Harriet Ho slipped by Andrea Chaves 3-1 (11-5, 7-11, 11-7, 11-7) in a battle of number ones.
Waterloo’s men’s team swept the Brock men 7-0 as top player Cameron Seth got by the Badgers’ Vincenzo Prior 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-2).
Meanwhile in Pool B, Rhea Dhar the Varsity Blues women’s team shut out McMaster 7-0. Dhar defeated Olivia Waite of the Marauders 3-0 (12-10, 11-7, 11-7). The Toronto men also shut down the Marauders 7-0. Alexi Gosset dropped the first set versus McMaster’s Sachin Ahuja, but rallied to win 3-1 (9-11, 11-4, 11-2, 11-4) victory.
The closest match came down to the Queen’s men versus Guelph as they held on to win 5-2. Queen’s build a 4-0 lead until Mohammed Salemwalla and Leon Trillia stole matches for the Gryphons. Queen’s Christopher Howard finished off Samuel Manley 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-2).
In Women’s Pool B, the Western Mustangs trotted past the Gryphons 7-0 with Amy Commisso battling Guelph’s Reese Maclean to a 3-1 (11-2, 4-11, 11-5, 13-11) finish.
Saturday’s schedule will commence at 9 a.m.
