By the Numbers: Student-athletes rising up the school ranks after latest outings
2464 – It was a record-setting week for the Warriors’ Tyler Ternowski, as he added another accolade to his growing résumé. The all-time single season touchdown leader in OUA history is now also Waterloo’s all-time leader in reception yards with 2,464. He accomplished the feat with a catch in the third quarter against the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, giving him 107 at the time. He finished the day with 141, as he now continues to extend his cushion atop the black and gold’s all-time list.

2015 – The taste of victory has been sweet for the Ryerson Rams of late, as their women’s soccer team has tallied up the triumphs in the early part of the season. In their most recent outings against RMC, Trent, and Ontario Tech, respectively, the Rams reeled off three straight victories, outscoring their opponents by a score of 8-1 during that span. This hot streak puts Ryerson in territory they haven’t seen in a few years, as it marks the first time since 2015 that the Rams have won three straight games.

152 – Sophie de Goede played a huge role in the No 3. Gaels defeating the No.4 Guelph Gryphons on Saturday. Not only was it a memorable day for Queen’s, who claimed a win over Guelph in women’s rugby for the first time since 2013, but for de Goede as well. The two-sport star was all over the scoresheet, hitting three penalty kicks, scoring five conversions, and adding a try. With her 24 total points this weekend, de Goede passed Andrea Wadsworth on the Gaels all-time scoring list and now sits in third with 152 points.

90 – The second win of the season did not come easy for the Trent Excalibur on Sunday, but their resilience proved valuable in their comeback victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues. After going down 2-0 after the first half, the Excalibur stormed back in the second 45. Goals in the 51st and 81st minute tied the game at two before Emma Twohey connected on the game-winner in injury time (90th minute) to give the visiting Peterborough squad the dramatic triumph.

69 – A number of golfers hit the links this weekend for a pair of tournaments, including the Gaels’ Michael von Schalburg. Not only did he help the Tricolour to a pair of podium finishes at the Gaels & Gryphon Invitational and the Bert Kea Invitational, respectively, but he did so with two first-place finishes individually. Helping him claim top spot at both events were identical results of 69, with the former checking in at 3-under and the encore putting him at 1-under par for the day.

20 – Top spot in the OUA’s West Division currently resides with the Western Mustangs, thanks in large part to their impeccable defensive prowess thus far. The team has yet to concede a goal this season, compared to their 13 goals for, with Megan Girardi leading the charge in those ever-growing clean sheets. The purple ponies’ keeper has turned away 20 shots through the team’s first six games, amassing five wins and a tie during that span, all while staying perfect between the pipes. This past weekend was her busiest in net, as the fourth-year goalie was called upon to make 11 saves across her two matches.

7 – The Varsity Blues scored a trio of wins during their weekend in Kingston, but could not have done so without the clutch offensive contributions from Emily Ziraldo. The veteran field hockey standout was in top form throughout the Blues three games at Queen’s, totaling seven goals across the weekend. Not only did she provide the quantity, but the quality as well, as she recorded the winning tally in all three of the team’s contests against Queen’s, Western, and Waterloo, buoying them to the top of the OUA standings through the opening two weeks of play.

3 – Several quarterbacks found themselves under pressure this weekend, as defences across the OUA came out in full force. One of the ways these point-preventers made their mark was via the sack, highlighted by a pair of standout efforts from the Gryphons and Lancers. Guelph’s Tavius Robinson and Windsor’s Nathaniel Vaikla both racked up three sacks on the day, catapulting them into the conference’s top-5 in the category for the year.
