Lions’ Johnson, Badgers’ Agyemang earn OUA Athlete of the Week honours
Burlington, Ont. – Kiyani Johnson and Jared Agyemang have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 22, 2019.
Female Athlete of the Week – Kiyani Johnson, York Lions, Soccer
The York Lions may have only taken the field once this weekend, but Kiyani Johnson made the most of every minute, buoying her squad to a convincing victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the process.
Despite being held scoreless to this point in the season, the Markham, Ont. native exploded onto the scoresheet in a big way against the Hawks. Johnson scored three goals, including the game winner, to lead the Lions to a big 4-0 victory on Friday evening. The fourth-year forward opened the scoring in the 14th minute, with what ultimately proved to be the game winner, and added another two goals in the 35th and 68th minutes, respectively, to complete the hat trick.
Johnson, a former OUA West first-team all-star, now leads the Lions and is tied for ninth in the OUA with those three goals.
Male Athlete of the Week – Jared Agyemang, Brock Badgers, Soccer
It was a productive weekend on the pitch for Brock’s Jared Agyemang, who powered his team offensively with a trio of goals to earn a split in the Badgers’ two outings.
Things started off on the right foot for the fourth-year striker and his St. Catharines squad, as they scored a 1-0 win over the Western Mustangs on Saturday. With the score knotted up at 0-0 late in the game, Agyemang was able to connect in the 90th minute off a breakaway play to put the Badgers ahead for good, connecting on his conference-best third game-winning goal of the season.
While the team result wasn’t what Brock was looking for in their encore on Sunday, Agyemang still gave the team plenty to cheer for with another productive outing. After going down by two goals in the first 11 minutes of play, Agyemang quickly got the Badgers back on track with a 12th minute tally of his own to cut the lead in half. Later in the opening half, the Brampton, Ont. native doubled down for another to tie the game at two. When all was said and done, the talented forward register three goals on nine shots for the weekend.
While the Lancers would ultimately score the 3-2 win on Sunday, Agyemang had plenty to celebrate after his strong individual performance, as he now leads the OUA scoring race with his seven, already surpassing the five markers he scored a year ago.
