Marquee Matchup: Hannah's hat trick helps Lions roll past Gryphons in key early-season clash
Kingston, Ont. (via York Lions) – The York University Lions field hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA Marquee Matchup on Sunday afternoon, winning 3-0 at Queen's University.
The win gives the Lions a second place standing in the league, trailing only the Toronto Varsity Blues by three points.
The Lions opened the scoring with an amazing unassisted goal from forward Lexi Hannah in the sixth minute of the third quarter. Hannah continued to dominate the scoreboard with two more unanswered goals – one coming in the 14th minute of the fourth quarter and the other in the final minutes of the game.
When the dust settled on this championship rematch, Hannah tallied her first hat trick of the season and Alycia Gray notched the shutout to help the two-time reigning champion Lions secure a triumphant 3-0 victory over the Gryphons.
The Lions will aim to keep their win streak alive and have the same intensity when they travel to London, Ont., to play against the Western Mustangs on Saturday, while the Gryphons will turn their attention to the aforementioned first place Toronto Varsity Blues.
