Banner Season: Windsor women, Laurier men win first OUA golf titles

Markham, Ont. – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men and Windsor Lancers women both claimed their first-ever provincial titles as the 2019 OUA golf championships wrapped up on Tuesday evening (Oct. 8) at Angus Glen Golf Club.

The Golden Hawks men finished +21 with a combined team score of 597, five strokes ahead of the 2018 OUA champion Ottawa Gee-Gees (602), to win the Ruttan Trophy. The Western Mustangs (603) claimed the bronze medal, finishing one stroke behind the Gee-Gees.

Laurier, who were three strokes off the lead after Day 1, was propelled by 2019 OUA individual gold medalist and winner of the Len Shore Trophy, Jaron Brown. Brown shot a two-day total of 145 (72, 73), making par on 27-of-36 holes, while also hitting four birdies.

“It feels amazing,” said Brown, a native of Thornhill, Ont. “It’s my fourth year playing OUA golf for Laurier and to finally get our first team title is extremely important for us. It was also great to top it off with an individual win. The key to winning was just perseverance - not getting upset if you hit a bad shot and just grinding it out until the very last hole.”

In a highly competitive field, three men tied for the individual silver medal. Justin Allen of the Guelph Gryphons (72,74), Ryan Murphy of the Golden Hawks (73,73) and Jarrod Smith (72,74) of the Windsor Lancers all shot two-day totals of 146 to earn a spot on the podium.

Laurier’s Jeff Colley earned his first career OUA coach of the year nod.

With all four golfers finishing registering Top 9 finishes, the Windsor Lancers women claimed their first Liz Hoffman Trophy in program history. The Lancers finished +43 with a combined team score of 475, five strokes ahead of the silver medalist Waterloo Warriors (480). The host Toronto Varsity Blues claimed the bronze medals with a score of 502.

In her first OUA championship appearance, Windsor Lancers standout Alyssa Getty claimed the Judy McCrae Trophy as the women’s individual champion, shooting a two-day total of 154 (79,75). Getty led all golfers with six birdies, while also making par on 17 holes.

“It’s a really big honour,” said Getty, who hails from Kingsville, Ont. “It’s what I’ve been working towards all season. Coming from Windsor, we are an underdog team so to come out here and show everyone that the Lancers are the real deal is really awesome. I’m really proud to be a Lancer and proud to be an OUA champion. Today I was just patient. This golf course is really tricky and I didn’t get too caught up in any bogeys or anything and just took it steady.“

Olivia Richards of the Waterloo Warriors earned the individual silver medal, finishing two strokes back of Getty at 156 (80,76). Mackenzie Rice of the Toronto Varsity Blues claimed the bronze medal with a 159 (79, 80).

Windsor’s Adam Wagner earned OUA coach of the year laurels.
