Banner Season: Gryphons sweep provincial championships for fourth straight year
Toronto (via York Lions) - Dominance continued from the Guelph Gryphons during the final day of the OUA Track & Field Championships, leading to a sweep of both the women’s and men’s banners in decisive fashion at the Toronto Track & Field Centre.
They won over half of the day’s running events, and a number of field events en route to a 122.5-point win in the men’s standings over their next closest opponent, and a 90-point win in the women’s standings.
It marks the fourth straight season the Gryphons have swept the OUA track and field banners.
The Guelph victories came in a wide-ranging array of running events. On the women’s side, they won each even of the day, except for the women’s 1500-metre run. Western Mustang Kate Current won that top prize.
Most notably, the women’s 60-metre dash was nearly a Gryphons sweep of the podium. Shyvonne Roxborough (7.34 seconds) and Jacqueline Madogo (7.41) finished first and second respectively for Guelph, and fellow Gryphon Von Davis barely missed the podium. Elizabeth Martin of Toronto took third place instead.
Guelph also took the crown in all of the day’s relay races – both the 4x200m and 4x400m under both banners.
A notable performance saw Western take second place in the men’s (87.5 points) and women’s (119) standings. In addition to their win in the women’s 1500-metre run, Rachel Campbell won the women’s weight throw. While the Mustangs men didn’t win any events, they amassed four medals on Day 2, showcasing their team depth.
The York Lions had a productive Day 2, medalling in five events overall and vaulting into third place for in the men’s standings and fourth in the women’s standings.
York’s point standing was secured during the final event of the day, when they took the top two spots in pole vault. Daniel Gleason struck gold, while Samuel Adams won the silver medal.
Keysean Powell also picked up his second medal of the meet, winning silver in the 60-metre dash.
Other landmark podium finishes for the Lions came in the men’s 4x400-metre relay, when Tohma Van Bergen came from behind to move past the Toronto Varsity Blues into third position on the final straightaway of the race’s last lap, as well as the women’s 4x200-metre and 4x400-metre relays.
York’s third place finish in the men’s standings was by a hair – they edged the Varsity Blues by just five points.
But Toronto didn’t miss out on the women’s podium. They won the team bronze, highlighted by gold medal-winning performances from Emily Branderhorst in the high jump and Kristen Schulz in the triple jump.
Qualifying athletes will now head to Edmonton in two weeks for the U SPORTS championships, hosted by the University of Alberta.
