Warriors Clairmont, Paladins Lamport earn OUA Athlete of the Week honours
Burlington, Ont. – Taytum Clairmont and Cameron Lamport have been named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Athletes of the Week for the period ending November 17, 2019.
Female Athlete of the Week – Taytum Clairmont, Waterloo Warriors, Hockey
To be the best, you have to beat the best, and the Waterloo Warriors surging start to the season continued to epitomize that theme this past weekend, with Taytum Clairmont powering the team’s latest wins against some stiff competition.
After her team got the scoring started against the No. 6 York Lions, Clairmont doubled the lead with what turned out to be the game-winner thanks to a short-handed effort halfway through the second period. Clairmont would then set up her team’s next goal with the primary helper before putting a bow on the three-point night with an empty-netter to seal the win over one of the top teams in the country. With another tough test against Western on Sunday, the fifth-year forward would continue her productive campaign with another two goals. Tied at 1-1 entering the final period, the Waterloo, Ont. native took it upon herself to secure another crucial three points for Waterloo, netting the game-winner with just four minutes to play and icing the win with her fourth goal of the weekend.
Clairmont’s impeccable efforts on the ice helped the black and gold rack up six points in the standings, pushing the team to a 7-2-1 record overall. The standout senior skater also turned her latest five points into a conference-lead in scoring, now with 15 points (8G, 7A) on the year.
Male Athlete of the Week – Cameron Lamport, RMC Paladins, Hockey
After leading RMC in points last year, Cameron Lamport has kept his foot on the gas pedal to start the 2019-20 season, most recently exploding for a five-point weekend against Nipissing and Carleton.
With the Paladins trailing after the first period against the Lakers, the third-year forward stepped up to score the game-winning goal for RMC in a come-from-behind victory. In addition to his goal, Lamport also added a pair of assists in the win. On the road against Carleton then, the Naval Cadet from Newmarket, Ont. ensured the Paladins power play remained red hot, scoring twice on the man-advantage and tying RMC for third in the league with 13 PPG this season.
Five points in a weekend ties Lamport's career high, which he earned in the last weekend of regular season play in 2018-19 and also included a three-point night against Nipissing. He now leads the Paladins in the 2019-20 campaign with 12 points through 12 games.
