No. 4 Badgers survive scare from Warriors

ST. CATHARINES, ON - The No. 4 ranked Brock University men's basketball team held on to defeat the Waterloo Warriors by the score of 66-63 Wednesday night at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Midway through the opening quarter, Brock led 9-8, before putting together a 12-3 run to lead 23-11 after 10 minutes. The Badgers held a 37-29 lead at the half.

Brock opened the third quarter with a basket, before Waterloo went on a 9-2 run to make it a one basket game 41-38 with six minutes left in the third. The teams would continue to share baskets the remainder of the quarter as Brock held onto a five point lead after 30 minutes, 51-45.

In the final quarter, Waterloo would continue to push bringing it within two points, 51-49, with 6:52 left in regulation. Brock would answer with a 10-2 run to go up 61-51 with 3:39 left. The Warriors would not go away, making it 63-58 with less than a minute left. Brock would knock down 3 of 6 from the charity stripe to go up 66-60, before Justin Hardy drained a three at the buzzer for Waterloo.

Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, ON) finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds for the double-double, while Cassidy Ryan (Mississauga, ON) contributed with 14 points off the bench.

Waterloo was led by Nedim Hodzic who added 22 points and eight boards in the loss. 

For the game, Brock shot 45.5% (25-55) from the field, 16.7% (2-12) from long range and 66.7% (14-21) from the charity stripe. The Warriors went 21-58 (36.2%) from the floor, including 5-23 (21.7%) from beyond the arc and 16-23 (69.6%) from the free throw line.

The Badgers next action is February 4th at 3pm when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Rams defence tames Lions

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams men's basketball team limited the visiting York Lions to just 53 points on Wednesday night, cruising to a 79-53 victory at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Coming off their first loss of the season, the Rams bounced back well and used a strong defensive performance to get the job done.

Manny Diressa (Toronto) and Adika Peter-McNeilly (Scarborough, Ont.) each finished with 20 points in the victory while Myles Charvis (Mississauga, Ont.) added 13 points.

The game started pretty evenly with the Rams leading just 7-6 through the first five minutes of play, but out of the media timeout the Ryerson squad tightened up their defence. York failed to score again in the first quarter and the Rams took a 13-6 advantage into the second quarter.

In the second frame the Rams were able to turn their stifling defence into offence. In particular, a nice sequence saw Keevon Small (Montreal, Que.) block a Lions shot which turned into an easy transition deuce for Diressa. That play made the score 24-9 just over three minutes into the quarter and the Rams scored with ease throughout the frame to lead 42-16 at halftime.

The Lions were able to hang with the Rams in the third quarter but a narrow 21-20 quarter score line favouring Ryerson meant York came no closer to narrowing the lead.

With the game already in hand, the Lions outscored Ryerson 17-16 in the final stanza to round out the scoring at 79-53.

The Rams forced 21 Lions turnovers while taking good care of the ball themselves, committing just nine turnovers.

Ryerson improves to 14-1 while York slips to 4-11. The Rams return to action this Friday when they host the Queen's Gaels starting at 8:00 p.m. at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
