Lancers remain undefeated in 2017 with win over rival Western
Remaining undefeated in 2017, the Lancer men's basketball team defeated the Western Mustangs 85-78 on Wednesday night at the St. Denis Centre.
The win keeps the Lancers four points ahead of the Laurier Golden Hawks and in first place in the OUA west division with a 7-4 record, while the Mustangs fall to 2-9 on the season.
Windsor came out strong to open the game and led 21-16 after the first quarter. The Lancers continued to control the game to start the second, but the Mustangs came back late in the frame to outscore Windsor by one. The Lancers held a narrow, 35-32 lead at the half.
Luke Allin had a solid first half for the Lancers scoring 12 points in the first twenty minutes of play, while Western's Jedson Tavrnier finished the half with 11 points.
In the second half, Mitch Farrell propelled the Lancers ahead of the Mustangs, scoring all 13 of his points in the final twenty minutes. He finished with the games on double-double adding 11 rebounds to his point total.
Allin finished the day with a team high 21 points and 8 rebounds, while Mike Rocca chipped in 14 points, and Tyler Persaud and Micqueel Martin put up 10 and 11 points, respectively.
The Lancers will now head up to London on Saturday afternoon for game two of a home-and-home series with the Mustangs. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00pm and can be seen at www.oua.tv.

Marauders top Laurier 85-54
The McMaster men's basketball team came out strong against Laurier on Wednesday night and defeated the Golden Hawks 85-54. The Marauders were playing a must-win game, after losing four of their last five and dropping to tenth in the U Sports Top-Ten.
Both teams came out to a slow start offensively, but a 10-point contribution from Matt Quiring in the first quarter gave McMaster a slim 19-13 lead going into the second quarter.
The Marauders looked like a completely different team in the second. They started out on a 17-4 run to take a 19-point lead. McMaster continued their strong play, outscoring Laurier 27-8 in the quarter, and was comfortably up 46-21 heading into the break.
The Golden Hawks started knocking down shots to begin the third, but McMaster responded to each basket with one of their own. They slowed down Laurier's offense to end the quarter and grew their lead to 29 after 30 minutes.
McMaster was able to hold off Laurier in the final quarter by going on a 12-3 run to start and came out with a 31-point blowout victory.
Quiring led the Marauders in scoring with a career-high 20 points on a perfect 10 for 10 shooting night from the field. Connor Gilmore got to the line 12 times and scored 15 points himself with 11 rebounds. The Marauders got it done on both ends of the floor shooting 50% from the field (30 of 60), while holding Laurier to just 28% (20 of 71).
Mac will have a couple of days off before they head to Guelph on Saturday to face the Gryphons.
