No. 6 Badgers knocks off No. 3 Marauders 72-71

HAMILTON, ON - The No. 6 ranked Brock University men's basketball team knocked off the No. 3 ranked McMaster Marauders by the score of 72-71 Wednesday night at the Burridge Gymnasium.

This game was what it was built up to be as Brock head coach Charles Kissi took on his alma mater. It was thrilling from start to finish seeing seven ties and 10 different lead changes.

The Badgers trailed 35-31 at the half and put together a run in the third quarter to go up 51-48 after 30 minutes.

With just over two minutes left in regulation, McMaster held a 63-62 lead, before Brock's Johneil Simpson (Toronto, ON) scored and got the and one to go up 65-63 with 1:26 remaining.

The Marauders answered with two free throws from David McCulloch to even the game 65-65 with 40 seconds on the clock.

The final 30 seconds was an exciting one. After a Brock timeout, Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, ON) scored to make it 67-65 and then after a McMaster timeout, Elgadi stripped the ball from McCulloch which led to two free throws from Simpson to put Brock up 69-65 with 22 seconds left.

After a Marauders miss, Elgadi would knock down just one of two free throws to make it 70-65 with 14 seconds left in the contest, which would be answered by a three-pointer from McMaster's Connor Gilmore to cut the Brock lead to two 70-68 with eight seconds remaining.

With McMaster having to foul, Brock's Tyler Brown (Hamilton, ON) would drain both free throws to put Brock up by four 72-68. In the final seconds, Gilmore would drain another three to make it a 72-71 final in favour of Brock.

The Badgers had three players in double figures led by Elgadi who added 20 points and 12 rebounds for the double-double. Ryan Bennett (Toronto, ON) and Cassidy Ryan contributed with 13 and 10 points respectively.

Gilmore led the Marauders offense with a game-high 25 points and 10 boards. McCulloch and Rohan Boney chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively in the loss.

For the game, Brock shot 41.3% (26-for-63) from the field, 26.7% (4-for-15) from three-point land and 84.2% (16-for-19) from the free throw McMaster went 25-for-72 (34.7%) from the floor, 7-for-26 (26.9%) from beyond the arc and 14-for-23 (60.9%) from the charity stripe.

The Badgers next action is Saturday, November 19 at 3pm when they host the Guelph Gryphons at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Gryphons pick up road win over Lancers

WINDSOR, ON - Two road games so far this season. Two wins. Wednesday night at the St. Denis Centre in Windsor, the Gryphons men's basketball team won 94-85 in what was the Lancers home opener. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 2-1 on the season while Windsor falls to 1-2.

After a tight opening quarter, the Gryphons locked down defensively in the 2nd quarter, limiting the Lancers to just 9 points in the quarter. The Gryphons took a seven-point lead into the half and saw that lead grow to 13 heading to the 4th quarter. A wildly high-scoring final quarter saw the Gryphons score 35 points but allow 39 to the Lancers. When the dust settled, the Gryphons left Windsor with a nine-point victory and their second road win of the young season.

Fourth year forward Ahmed Haroon finished with a team-high 17 points to go along with 6 rebounds. He was one of six Gryphons to score in double figures with Jonathan Wallace pouring in 16-points on just 5-of-8 shooting. Wallace was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. The Gryphons as a team were 24-of-29 from the charity stripe (83%). Point guard Daniel Dooley, like Wallace, was also 6-6 from the line and finished with 15 points. Kingslee D'Silva, now in his second year with the Gryphons, had one of his best games of his young Gryphon career, and was the only player on either team to record a double-double. D'Silva finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds while also racking up 3 blocks. Rookie point guard Jordan Sobot (Burlington, ON) poured in 15 points in 20 minutes of floor time off the bench, while fourth year guard Taylor Boers provided some sharp-shooting off the bench, going 3-of-4 from downtown and finishing with 13 points. As a team, the Gryphons shot an impressive 56% from the field on the night.

The Gryphons will now travel to St. Catharines for a Saturday afternoon matchup against the No. 6-ranked team in the country in the Brock Badgers (2-0). The Badgers were also in action on Wednesday night and, like the Gryphons, were able to pick up a road win. Brock escaped McMaster's Burridge Gymnasium with a one-point win over the Marauders, winning 72-71.
