
Carleton’s Kajami-Keane honoured as ArcelorMittal Dofasco U SPORTS athlete of the week
TORONTO (U SPORTS) – Alex Poznikoff from the Alberta Pandas and Kaza Kajami-Keane of the Carleton Ravens are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco USPORTS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending January 22, 2017.
TORONTO (U SPORTS) – Alex Poznikoff from the Alberta Pandas and Kaza Kajami-Keane of the Carleton Ravens are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco USPORTS female and male athletes of the week for the period ending January 22, 2017.
Poznikoff, a second-year physical education and recreation major from Edmonton, racked up eight points – four goals and four assists - in a weekend home-and-home sweep of Calgary. The Pandas forward recorded a goal and two assists in a 4-0 shutout of the Dinos Friday, before scoring a hat-trick and two helpers in 7-1 win Saturday. Poznikoff, who sits tied for fifth in the nation in both goals (13), and points (24), will be playing for U SPORTS Team Canada at the 2017 Winter Universiade in Almaty, Kazakhstan, which faces off against China in its first game on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. local time (5:30 a.m. ET).
Hockey players Karen Collins of the Laurentian Voyageurs and Sarah Bujold of the StFX X-Women, along with McGill Martlets volleyball player Claire Vercheval were also nominated for the women's award.
Kajami-Keane, a fifth-year communications and media studies student from Ajax, Ont., averaged 19.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in three games over the last week. The Ravens veteran had 10 points, six rebounds and two assists as Carleton defeated crosstown rival and then-ranked No.2 Ottawa 81-40 last Tuesday. Kajami-Keane followed that up with a 20-point, three-rebound, three-assist night in a 90-54 win over Guelph before narrowly missing a triple double with 27 points, seven boards and eight helpers as Carleton beat Lakehead 96-58.
Hockey players Steven Sanford of the Calgary Dinos and Andrew Rieder of the Dalhousie Tigers, as well as Laval Rouge et or Volleyball player Vicente Ignacio Parraguirre Villalobos were the other male nominees.
