No. 6 Brock escapes Sudbury with 86-82 win
SUDBURY, ON - The No. 6 ranked Brock University men's basketball team escaped Sudbury with an 86-82 road victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs Friday night.
Brock had five players in double figures led by Ryan Bennett (Toronto, ON) who finished with 17 points and six rebounds, Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, ON) contributed with a double-double adding 16 points and 10 rebounds. Rounding out the leaders were Tyler Brown (Hamilton, ON) who added 15 points and six rebounds and Cassidy Ryan (Mississauga, ON) and Johneil Simpson (Toronto, ON) who chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively.
With his 16 points tonight, Elgadi surpasses Allen MacDougall (1853) for 8th all-time in Brock career scoring. He now has 1858 career points. Simpson (1414) also moved into 17th all time surpassing Brian Bleich (1413).
Laurentian had four players in double digits led by Kadre Gray who added 24 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Rounding out the offense were OJ Watson (15 pts), Nelson Yengue (10 pts) and Elijah Davidson (10 pts).
For the game, Brock shot 29-for-58 (50.0%) from the field, 6-for-13 (46.2%) from beyond the arc and 22-for-31 (71.0%) from the charity stripe. The Voyageurs were 31-for-61 (50.8%) from the floor, including 7-for-17 (41.2%) from long range and 13-for-17 (76.5%) from the free throw line.
The Badgers return to action Saturday night at 8pm as they take on the Nipissing Lakers on the road.

Iheadindu's late three lifts Gaels over Mustangs
LONDON, Ont. (January 6, 2017)- Richard Iheadindu sunk a critical three-point basket with just over a minute left in regulation, and the Queen's Gaels men's basketball team staved off a comeback bid, defeating the Western Mustangs 75-69 on Saturday evening.

Sukhpreet Singh (Toronto) tallied a team-high 16 points, showing 6-of-12 from the field and adding six points and four steals. Tanner Graham (Kingston, Ont.) added 14 points and eight rebounds, and Iheadindu (Brampton, Ont.) recorded 12 points, all of which came from a team-best four three-point buckets.
The victory improves the Gaels conference record to 6-1. Omar Shiddo led all players with 21 points, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from three-point range in a losing cause for the Mustangs, who fall to 1-8 on the season.
After the Gaels went up by as many as 14 points in the first half, the host Mustangs responded and cut the Queen's deficit down to five by halftime. Iheadindu nailed a jumper from range midway through the third quarter to push the lead back up to double-digits. Western stayed within striking distance into the final quarter, and then went on an 11-2 run to take their first lead of the contest at the 4:38 mark of the fourth.
After Tanner Graham (Kingston) brought the Gaels to within a point of the lead, Iheadindu nailed a three to put the men back on top with 1:17 left. The Mustangs would miss their next three shot attempts, and Isse Ibrahim sunk all four of his free throw attempts to give the visitors some breathing room with time winding down and secure the victory.

McMaster downs Nipissing
The McMaster men's basketball team looked like an entirely different team than the one that lost three straight before the holiday break. McMaster fought hard the entire game and defeated the Nipissing Lakers 90-75 on Friday night in North Bay.
McMaster led the entire first quarter, but the Lakers were able to respond and managed to keep the game in reach, with Mac leading by 5 points going into the second.
In the second quarter, Mac looked like they would pull away as they had an eight-point lead midway through the second. However, Nipissing managed to finish the quarter on an 8-2 run topped off by a half-court buzzer-beater by Jaaden Lewis, and McMaster went into halftime holding on to a slim 36-34 lead.
The third quarter was all McMaster, as they began to build up the lead. Impressive play by Rohan Boney and Connor Gilmore helped Mac go into the fourth quarter with a comfortable 15-point lead. Gilmore topped off the third quarter with a buzzer-beater of his own, nailing a shot from well beyond half court, before walking to the bench.
The Lakers refused to give up without a fight in the final quarter, and started the fourth on a 15-4 run to cut Mac's lead down to four points with five minutes left in the game. The Marauders then responded with a run of their own before finishing out the game with a 15-point victory.
Gilmore led the way for McMaster dropping 27 points with nine rebounds and four steals. Boney chipped in 20 points himself as both helped secure the victory for the Marauders.
The Marauders will now look to turn their losing streak into a winning streak as they head to Sudbury for Saturday's game against the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Lancers open New Year with win over York
The Lancer men's basketball team defeated the York Lions 83-78 on Friday night at the St. Denis Centre.
Windsor shot 39% in the first half to take a dominating 45-28 lead at the break, and were led by Luke Allin, who was playing his first home game with the Blue & GOld, with 14 points and two rebounds.
The Lions upped their game in the second half, and slowly chipped away at the Lancer lead. The Blue & Gold's defense held off the Lion attack to earn the win.
Mike Rocca had a tremendous second half and led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds.
Windsor will host the Queen's Gaels tomorrow afternoon at 4:00pm at the St. Denis Centre. The game can be seen live at www.oua.tv.

Strong second half lifts Blues over Gryphons
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team outscored the Guelph Gryphons 49-31 in the second half en route to a 77-66 victory on Friday night (Jan. 6) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.
With the win, the Blues improve to 6-3 and remain in second place in the OUA East, while the Gryphons drop to 3-4 and sit second in the Central division.
Fifth-year forward Devin Johnson led all players with a double-double of 23 points and 10 boards, while second-year forward Daniel Johansson had 17 points on the night.
Third-year guard Sage Usher tallied 13 points, while Reilly Reid notched a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, and added three assists and two steals in the win.
A low-scoring first quarter saw Toronto build an 11-8 lead. Guelph opened the second frame on a 12-2 streak and held a 35-28 advantage at halftime.
The Blues rallied and started the second half on a 10-2 run, with an Usher three regaining the U of T lead (38-37). Toronto continued to press and, highlighted by a Sahota dunk, outscored Guelph 25-9 in the third quarter to take a 53-44 lead heading into the final frame.
U of T continued to roll in the fourth and opened the game wide open with 10 consecutive points from Johnson.

Rams erupt in fourth to knock off Thunderwolves
TORONTO - In a tight contest through 29 minutes, six points in the final 13 seconds of the 3rd quarter crippled the Lakehead Thunderwolves and the Rams piled on 32 points in the final 10 minutes to make a close game look like a blow out, winning 88-64.

Adika Peter-McNeilly (Scarborough, Ont.) once again led the Rams offensively with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists, but it was the impact performance of freshman Keevon Small (Montreal, Que.) that was the difference. Small posted a career-high 17 points and added five rebounds and four steals.
In their opening game of 2017, both teams struggled out of the gate. In the first ten minutes the teams combined for just 19 points and the Rams held a slim 11-8 advantage.
Midway through the second quarter Lakehead took their first lead of the game at 21-19 but the lead didn't last long. The teams traded buckets down the stretch and Thunderwolves guard Nick Burke hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer sounded to cut Ryerson's lead to just one at 34-33 at halftime.
Lakehead looked to have made the necessary adjustments early in the third quarter as they opened the frame with eight of the first 10 points to take a 41-36 lead.
Just over two and a half minutes into the second half, both head coaches seemed to get fired up and exchanged pleasantries along the sideline. Whatever was said helped fuel both teams, as the energy ramped up in Coca-Cola Court.
Keevon Small collected the first of his two inbound steals and slam dunks which was followed shortly thereafter by a dunk-of-the-year candidate from Lakehead's Bacarius Dinkins. When the dust settled, the teams were still tied, 45-45.
The teams continued to trade blows down the stretch in the third quarter before the definitive turning point in the game. With just 13 seconds remaining in the frame, Manny Diressa (Toronto) knocked down a pull-up three-ball to give the Rams a 53-48 advantage. Then, Small collected his second inbound steal and dunk to quickly make it 55-48. On the ensuing inbounds, Small collected yet another steal before he was fouled and added one free throw. The six points in 13 seconds sucked the life out of the Thunderwolves, and paved the way for the Rams big fourth quarter.
Riding the momentum from their freshman's play, Ryerson shot the lights out in the fourth quarter and piled on 32 points to turn a close contest into the 22-point victory.
The Rams move to 8-0 on the season while Lakehead drops to 2-6 on the year. Ryerson is back in action on Saturday night when they host the Guelph Gryphons starting at 8:00 p.m. That game can be seen live on OUA.tv and Rogers TV Toronto.

Carleton dominates second half in 109-73 dismantling of Laurier
WATERLOO, ON — The Carleton Ravens men's basketball team cruised to a 109-73 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, their sixth in a row to start the season. Their scoring output was the highest of the season thus far, with the Ravens scoring 40 points in the final quarter.
Kaza Kajami-Keane (Ajax, ON) opened the game with two triples in the first two minutes, sparking a 9-0 run for the Ravens to start the game. Connor Wood (Guelph, ON) also started the game well, scoring eight straight points for the Ravens during the frame. The Ravens ended the first with a 25-14 lead, led by their two stars – Kajami-Keane and Wood.
Kajami-Keane opened up the second with back-to-back buckets as well, this time making a couple of layups to start the quarter. The Golden Hawks turned the tables soon however, when rookie Tevaun Kokko went off for 15 points in the quarter without missing a single shot. Kokko led the Golden Hawks back into the game, and the score was tied up by halftime, 40-40. Kajami-Keane scored 15 points with three 3-pointers in the half, while Kokko scored 21 with four triples. They were the matchup to watch this game, with both players missing just one shot in the opening half.
The Ravens took control of the contest in the third, outscoring the Golden Hawks 29-12. Kajami-Keane scored nine points to lead the way, and Wilfred Laurier was unable to buy a bucket against Carleton's tremendous third quarter defence. Eddie Ekiyor (Ottawa, ON) also had a great quarter off the bench, scoring eight points, including a tip in to beat the buzzer. The Ravens ended the quarter up 69-52.
Carleton continued their offensive onslaught in the fourth, scoring 40 in the quarter against a Golden Hawks team that looked lost in the second half. Connor Wood scored 12 points in the final period, hitting three triples to extinguish any chance of a Golden Hawk comeback. Coach Dave Smart put his subs in, and Joe Rocca (Sarnia, ON) scored 10 of his 15 in the final quarter, leading the Ravens bench in their continued dismantling of the Golden Hawks' defence.
Kaza Kajami-Keane led the way for the Ravens with 24 points, shooting an efficient 10-for-13 from the field. Connor Wood and Eddie Ekiyor were close behind with 22 and 20 points, respectively. Wood and Ekiyor also added 9 rebounds each, playing leading roles in the Ravens' first victory of the new year.
Kokko played a tremendous game, leading all scorers with 27 points on 9-11 shooting from the field and 5-6 from three-point territory.
The Ravens will next take on the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, January 7, the second half of their road trip to Waterloo, Ontario.

Gee-Gees open 2017 with big road win over Warriors
The Gee-Gees men's basketball team kicked off the New Year with the first of a two-part weekend series in Waterloo, Ont. on Friday night. The nationally no. 4 ranked Gee-Gees cruised to a 83-48 win over the Waterloo Warriors (1-7), pushing the team's regular season record to a perfect 6-0.
Caleb Agada was the driving force behind the Ottawa effort, stuffing his stat line with a 23-point and seven-steal, and six-assist performance in the win.
"After the break you never know how you're going to come out," said Gee-Gees head coach James Derouin. "I was very very pleased. We had a good week of practice and obviously a successful tournament, so we came in feeling pretty good about where we're at."
Ottawa burst out of the gate with a 9-0 run before the Warriors had to call a timeout. Agada and Brody Maracle traded scores in the early frame as the Gee-Gees closed out the quarter with a solid 19-8 lead.
The Gee-Gees offence erupted in the second quarter tallying 26 points before the half. The defensive unit locked down in the quarter, causing multiple Warriors turnovers and allowing only eight points. "Defensively and offensively all things were clicking," said Derouin.
After the half, Derouin exercised his bench while the team grappled with foul troubles. Calvin Epistola was constant for the team through the stretch, hitting open shots, and playing aggressively on the defensive end. The second-year guard finished with 12 points off the bench.
