MALE: Brandon Ramirez (Scarborough, Ont.) – 2nd yr – York Lions – Basketball
Despite two difficult road results, York Lions forward Brandon Ramirez (Scarborough, Ont.) has been recognized for a pair of dominant individual performances, earning Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week honours.
Ramirez, a second-year geography student-athlete, averaged 32.5 points and 11.5 rebounds in a pair of games against Windsor and Western this past weekend.
On Friday night against Windsor, the Scarborough, Ont. native scored 31 points and 15 rebounds, while shooting 68% (13-of-19) as the Lions fell 83-78 to the Lancers.
A night after the first double-double of his career, the 6’5”, 240 lbs forward established a new career high with 34 points and also added eight rebounds in a 81-71 loss to the Mustangs.
Ramirez accounted for almost 44 percent of the Lions points this past week and thanks to two monster games now sits in fourth place in OUA, averaging 21.0 points per game.
Next up for Ramirez and Lions is a battle for bragging right in the ‘6 with the rival University of Toronto Varsity Blues (Friday 1:00 PM) and Ryerson Rams (Saturday 8:00 PM).
FEMALE: Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) – 3rd yr. – UOIT Ridgebacks – Hockey
After leading the Ridgebacks women’s hockey team to a pair of victories this past weekend, UOIT forward Kassidy Nauboris (Brampton, Ont.) has been named the Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week.
Nauboris, a third-year kinesiology major, assisted on all three Ridgebacks goals before scoring in the shootout as UOIT upset the No. 7 ranked Nipissing Lakers 4-3 on Saturday.
The Brampton, Ont. native followed that up on Sunday with a hat trick in a 6-5 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs. After scoring two first period goals to help the Ridgebacks enter the intermission tied 2-2, Nauboris saved her best effort for last as she found the back of the net just 1:37 into the extra frame to give the Ridgebacks a weekend sweep on their northern road trip.
In 14 games this season for the Ridgebacks, Nauboris leads the team in scoring with ten goals and five assists.
Nauboris and the Ridgebacks will look to extend their win streak to five games as they host the defending McCaw Cup champions, the Guelph Gryphons, at the Campus Ice Centre on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:30 PM and can be seen live on OUA.tv.
