MALE: Devin Johnson (Ajax, Ont.) – 5th yr – Toronto Varsity Blues – Basketball
Following a big performance this weekend, University of Toronto Varsity Blues forward Devin Johnson (Ajax, Ont.) has been named the Investors Group OUA Male Athlete of the Week.
Taking on the crosstown rival Lions as part of Toronto’s annual School Day game, Johnson, a fifth-year political sciences major, recorded a game high 23 points, five rebounds and three assists as the Blues beat York 79-58.
The Ajax, Ont. native followed that up on Saturday with another game high, dropping 29 points as the Blues defeated the visiting Queen’s Gaels 85-77. The 6’5” forward also had seven rebounds, two assists and a steal in 36 minutes of action.
In 15 games this season, Johnson is averaging 21.5 points per game, the second highest mark in the conference.
Toronto, who is 7-3 in their last 10 games, will travel across town on Friday to battle the rival No. 5 ranked Ryerson Rams.
FEMALE: Jackie Rochefort (Ajax, Ont.) – 4th yr. – Nipissing Lakers – Hockey
Nipissing goaltender Jackie Rochefort (Ajax, Ont.) has been named Investors Group OUA Female Athlete of the Week after she recorded back-to-back shutouts this weekend as the Lakers picked up a pair of wins.
On Friday afternoon, Rochefort, a fourth-year psychology major, turned aside all 14 shots she faced as the Lakers defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-0. Two first period goals would be all the Lakers would need as Rochefort was rock solid in net as she recorded her fourth shutout of the season.
Returning to the net less than 24 hours later, the Ajax, Ont. native picked up right where she left off, making nine saves in a 1-0 OT win over the visiting Waterloo Warriors.
In 17 games this season, Rochefort leads OUA with 13 wins, while her goals against average (1.38) and save percentage (.944) rank her third in the conference.
With just four games remaining in the regular season, Rochefort and the Lakers look to make it three straight wins when they travel to Toronto on Friday to take on the Varsity Blues.
