(OTTAWA, ON) — The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team was eliminated from Queen's Cup contention at the Carleton Ice House on Saturday night, as the Ravens fell 6-3 to the UQTR Patriotes in Game 2 of the OUA East Final.
Four Patriotes registered multi-point games on Saturday while Carleton struggled to solve UQTR goaltender Sebastien Auger.
"The boys competed hard, I can't fault their effort," said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston. "Obviously it's disappointing, we had some breakdowns and they ended up in the back of our net—you have to give credit where credit is due, they're an excellent team."
The visitors struck first blood, as Mathieu Lemay beat Ravens goaltender Francis Dupuis (Ottawa, ON) from a bad angle at 17:54 of the first period.
Carleton returned fire just 42 seconds later through Ryan Van Stralen (Prescott, ON) and the game sat deadlocked at one after 20 minutes.
Alex Boivin (Ottawa, ON) pulled Carleton in front at 11:57 of the middle stanza, but Lemay responded in kind just 27 seconds after with a one-timer to draw the Pats level.
UQTR veteran Tommy Giroux continued his red-hot series late in the period, giving his team a lead at the 16:42 mark that it would hold into the second intermission.
A pair of quick goals off two defensive breakdowns in the middle of the third period from Pierre-Maxime Poudrier and Giroux pushed the Pats' lead to three.
David Weckworth's (Ottawa, ON) late goal cut the UQTR lead to 5-3 and gave Ravens fans some hope, but Marc-Olivier Mimar iced the game—and series—for the visitors with an empty-net goal.
"I'm hoping the guys can re-energize and be ready to go," said Coach Johnston, whose Ravens will host a third-place game next Saturday at the Ice House with a berth at nationals on the line. "We'll have to be at our best to beat (Guelph or Western) two excellent teams—right now, we're not really in that headspace just yet."
