Just three days after upsetting the top-seeded York Lions, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team notched a 3-1 victory over the Western Mustangs in Game 1 of their OUA West semifinal series on Wednesday night (Feb. 24) in London, Ont.
Third-year netminder Andrew Hunt posted 53 saves, while fourth-year forward Patrick Marsh scored two goals and rookie Mathew Campagna had two helpers in the victory.
The Blues will look for the series sweep as they host Game 2 at Varsity Arena this Friday, February 26. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale here. The game will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.
After a scoreless first period, the Blues got on the board first when rookie Mathew Campagna's centering pass bounced off of Russell Turner and into the net.
Less than three minutes later, Western's Alex Micallef evened the score, also on the man advantage, but that didn't last long as fourth-year Blues forward Patrick Marsh scored 30 seconds later to restore Toronto's lead. Marsh capitalized on a Western turnover in front of their net and roofed the puck in close for his fourth point of the postseason.
Toronto was up 2-1 at the second intermission.
Marsh added some insurance midway through the second period, scoring off a faceoff to secure the Game 1 victory.
