Moffat, Smith pace Warriors to fourth straight win
On a night when the Waterloo Warriors put the "special" into special teams, it was only fitting that the game was decided on a last-minute man advantage.
Mike Moffat (Waterloo) scored three power play markers, and Andrew Smith (Kitchener) potted a tiebreaking power play goal with 28 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Warriors to a dramatic 6-5 win over the Western Mustangs on Friday night in Waterloo.
Captain Joe Underwood (Canton) added four assists, and the Warriors went 4-for-8 on the man advantage. The Warriors also got a shorthanded tally from Brett Mackie (Whitby), and Joey Champigny (East Angus) scored the only even-strength goal for the hosts.
Mike Morrison (Hamilton) turned aside 34 shots for the victory, as the Warriors climbed back to the .500 mark with an 8-8 record heading into the exam and holiday break. The six-goal outburst was a season high, and perhaps it was a surprising outburst, considering the Warriors were without leading scorer Colin Behenna (Waterloo) due to an academic commitment.
Meanwhile, a quartet of Mustangs – Matt Marantz, Stephen Gaskin, Ray Heuther, and Connor Chartier – notched a goal and an assist apiece. Peter Delmas stopped 12 of 16 shots before giving way to Greg Dodds, who made 18 saves in a losing cause.
For a game that ended in such an exciting fashion for the Warriors, it sure didn't start out that way – the Mustangs scored two quick goals and led 2-0 before the game was four minutes old. But the Warriors exploded for five unanswered goals between the first and second periods, including a natural hat trick from Moffat – the first of his CIS career.
Trailing 5-2 late in the second though, the pendulum once again swung back towards the Mustangs – they scored twice in the middle frame to cut the deficit to 5-4. Then, with less than four minutes to play in the third, Western's Spenser Cobbold pinballed a puck behind Morrison to complete the comeback and tie it at 5-5.
But a late penalty to Western's Sean Callaghan gave Waterloo's potent power play one more chance, and it cashed. Stephen Silas (Georgetown) took the Moffat feed and zipped a pass back door for Smith, who guided it in for the eventual game-winner in the contest's final minute.
The Warriors will now head into the break on a four-game winning streak. They're back in action on January 8 in Toronto, when they visit the Ryerson Rams.

Golden Hawks top Lions despite two goals VanTeeling
The York University Lions men's hockey team was defeated by the Laurier Golden Hawks 5-2 on Friday night (Dec. 4) at Canlan Ice Sports.
Mitch VanTeeling (Brandon, Man.) scored both goals on Friday in the loss. VanTeeling now has four points in the past two games and a season total of 10 points.
The strong goaltending from Laurier Golden Hawk Vinny Merante proved to be the difference in the game as Merante turned aside 33 shots in the win.
The first period began with the Lions on the attack and firing from all angles, but Mernate shut the door on multiple early scoring chances. Just over five minutes into the opening frame and on the power play, a bouncing puck found its way into the slot and Laurier forward Derek Schoenmakers wired it past Chris Perugini (King city, Ont.) high glove to take the early lead.
After the Laurier tally the Lions were relentless in the attacking zone and they eventually managed to beat Merante with a Julien Lepage (Baie-Comeau, Que.) shot from the point that was kicked out but found the stick of VanTeeling that he poked through Merante's five-hole to tie the game at 1-1.
The second period was completely dominated by the Golden Hawks as they beat Perugini three times. The first goal came with just under three minutes into the period as an odd angle shot by Erik Pushka squeaked through Perugini short side, handing the lead back to the Golden Hawks.
Seven minutes after the second goal Pushka was back at it as he finished off a remarkable play from Christian Mroczkowski. The play began with Mroczkowski taking the puck into the Lions zone and dancing around multiple defenders, then waiting out Perugini until he found an opening to slide the puck over to Pushka for the easy tap in.
Late in the second period the Golden Hawks added another goal, this time it was a result of a giveaway that led to a 3-on-1 going back the other way, Will Cook chose not to pass to either of his teammates and fired a snap shot top left corner, making the game 4-1 for the Golden Hawks going into the third period.
In the third the Lions came out of the gates with intensity and it proved pay dividends as they cut the game in half with VanTeeling's second score on the night. The goal was scored from a point shot from Tyler Mort (Keswick, Ont.) that hit a pack of Lions in front of the net and eventually found its way to VanTeeling, who potted the loose puck.
The late resurgence of the Lions fell short as the Golden Hawks capped off the night with an empty net goal with seconds remaining to give the Lions their third loss of the season. The CIS 10th-ranked lions fall to 9-4-3 on the season while the Golden Hawks improved to 7-8-0.
The Lions will be back on the ice on Saturday (Dec. 5) when they welcome the Lakehead Thunderwolves to Canlan Ice Sports for the last game of 2015. Puck drop is at 7pm.

Fifty-shot barrage helps Ravens sink beleaguered Lakers
(OTTAWA, ON) — Contributions from nine different players pushed the Carleton Ravens comfortably past the visiting Nipissing Lakers, 4-1, on Friday's 'Teddy Bear Toss Night' at the Carleton Ice House. Special teams won the day for head coach Marty Johnston's Carleton team, with the Raven powerplay and penalty kill contributing two goals and six kills respectively.
"We're staying consistent with our unites, and it's good to see the special teams doing so well," said Coach Johnston after the win, which saw his team outshoot Nipissing 50-13. "I thought the first forty minutes we were really good, with a little blip in the third, but the guys rebounded — it was a good win for us tonight."
Forward Brent Norris (Ottawa, ON) opened the scoring for Carleton (11-4-0) late in the opening frame, showcasing his quick hands at the side of the Nipissing (7-6-3) net to tuck a shot past Lakers netminder Kirk Rafuse.
The Ravens dominated the second period, outshooting their visitors 19-2 and potting a pair of goals to kill the game. Mitch Zion (Manotick, ON) doubled Carleton's lead just 2:51 into the middle frame, taking a slick feed from Brett Gustavsen (Scarborough, ON) before streaking and beating Rafuse on the forehand. Corey Durocher (Ottawa, ON) extended the Carleton lead to three late in the period on a powerplay tap-in.
The Ravens and Lakers traded powerplay goals in the final frame — CU's from Mike McNamee (Perth, ON), Nip's from Colin Campbell — to round out Friday night's boxscore.
"We're happy with the direction we're headed," said Coach Johnston post-game. "The guys in (the room) have gelled well, and they've accepted the challenge set by the coaching staff to consistently get better."
Francis Dupuis (Ottawa, ON) turned aside 12 of the 13 Nipissing shots he faced between the pipes for Carleton, and improved his personal record on the season to 8-1 with the win.
Carleton will make the short trip to Kingston on Saturday night to round out the 2015 portion of their schedule at Constantine Arena against the RMC Paladins (1-14-3). Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. against the Paladins, who were edged 4-3 by the No. 1-ranked McGill Redmen on Friday and can pose a threat to any team in the OUA on any given night.
"Hopefully we can finish off with a win tomorrow, but we know we're going to be in for a tough test," said Coach Johnston.

Rookie Storto plays hero as hockey Redmen escape from penitentiary town with win in Kingston
KINGSTON, Ont. -- Senior Mathieu Pompei tallied twice and rookie David Storto scored the game-winner at 17:55 of the third period as No.1-ranked McGill escaped from the country's most famous penitentiary city with a 4-3 road victory over the Royal Military College Paladins, Friday.
It was the 1,001st lifetime victory for the Redmen against Canadian university opponents and improved McGill's record to 62-8-4 overall against the Paladins.
The Remen jumped into a 3-0 first period lead on goals by defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi (who needed just 67 seconds to tally his ninth of the season), and Pompei, who struck for his 12th and 13th markers of the season at 3:25 and 16:41, respectively. Talbot-Tassi is ranked second among all CIS rearguards in goals, assists and points with a 9-17-26 record in 18 contests.
Then McGill watched in horror as RMC rallied in the third period with three straight goals from the sticks of John Livingston (4:42), Bruce Hornbrook (8:57) and Eric Louis-Seize (13:21).
With sudden-death overtime looming, Storto struck for the decisive goal, converting passes from Liam Heelis and Patrick Delisle-Houde. It was the first official goal of the OUA season for the 5-foot-10, 184-pound native of Mascouche, Que., who previously tallied an exhibition marker -- also against RMC -- in a 5-1 preseason win on home-ice, Sept. 26.
The Redmen had a 42-38 advantage in shots as 20-year-old freshman Joe Fleschler, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound native of Summit, N.Y., became the first American goaltender ever to start for McGill. He made 25 saves to collect his first CIS victory. He started in place of Jacob Gervais-Chouinard, who was given the night off after 13 consecutive starts between the pipes.
RMC goalie Matt Murphy took the loss despite a 38-save performance.
McGill, which entered the game with the top power-play in the nation -- with 33 goals in 99 chances -- went 0-for-4 with the man-advantage, failing to score a PPG for only the fourth time in 18 league games. The Paladins went 1-for-3 with the extra attacker.
High-scoring Redmen blueliner Samuel Labrecque was held off the scoresheet, ending a seven-game point-scoring streak. It marked only the fourth time this season that he had failed to register at least a point. Nonetheless, he still leads the nation in scoring with 32 points, including 13 goals, in 18 games. Teammates David Rose (29 pts) and Mathieu Pompei (27) rank second and third, respectively, among CIS point-getters.
McGill, which jumped into sole possession of first place in the OUA East with a stellar 15-2-1 record, now gets a three-week break for exams and holidays. They will resume their schedule at the end of the month with a pair of non-conference games against NCAA teams, at Yale (Dec. 29) and Holy Cross (Dec. 30). The regular season resumes in the new year with road games at Laurentian in Sudbury, Ont., and Nipissing in North Bay, Ont., Jan. 8-9, respectively.

Ridgebacks enter the break with 10 wins
OSHAWA, Ont. – The UOIT men's hockey team ran into a hot goaltender on Friday night as Taylor Dupuis made 34 saves to lead Ryerson to a 3-1 victory at the Campus Ice Centre.
The Ridgebacks enter the holiday break with ten wins for the first time in the nine-year history of the program. With a 10-5-1 record, UOIT sits in fourth place in the OUA eastern conference standings trailing Carleton (11-4-0) by one point.
The Ridgebacks' lone goal on Friday came late in the first period, when Adam Campagnolo (Waterloo, Ont.) crashed the net. The second year forward was able to put one past Dupuis, with Keaton Lubin (Okotoks, Alta.) and Cameron Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) earning assists.
UOIT threw 35 shots on goal and hit a number of posts, but the bounces seemed to go Ryerson's way all night long. Mark Petaccio (Sicklerville, N.J.), who scored three goals on Thursday night, was stoned on a breakaway in the opening five minutes of the game, setting the tone for the night.
With the score tied at 1-1 late in the second period, Rams forward Aaron Armstrong took advantage of a Ridgeback turnover, blasting one past Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) for the game-winning goal.
After fighting off a pair of penalties in the third, the Ridgebacks fired seven shots on goal in the final ten minutes of the game. James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) had a pair of golden opportunities to tie it, but Dupuis came up big on a breakaway followed by a snap shot ringing off the iron.
Daniel Clairmont scored the game's opening goal for Ryerson and added an assist while Andreas Tsogkas iced the game with his second goal of the season with just three minutes to go. Luke Mercer picked up two assists in the win.
O'Neill finished the night making 26 stops for UOIT, as he enters the break playing all but 20 minutes in the first half of the second. The second-year netminder has a 3.20 goals against average with a .899 save percentage.
UOIT will be back on home ice on Wed. Dec. 30 when they take on the Queen's Gaels in an exhibition game. Conference action will resume on Friday, Jan. 8 in Montreal against Concordia.

High scoring third period leads to another Voyageurs loss
The Laurentian Voyageurs travelled into Quebec with an eventful third period that put the game out of reach for the men as the Concordia Stingers won 5-1.
The Stingers took control of the first period, taking seventeen shots in the frame but Laurentian's Alain Valiquette kept the game scoreless. The second continued in a similar fashion, with the Voyageurs coming up stronger to even up the playing field. Concordia was awarded four powerplay opportunities in the period, they were unable to score as Laurentian's penalty kill worked hard to eliminate any chance of the Stingers taking a lead.
Four minutes into the third period, the Stingers took a penalty of their own. The Voyageurs looked to get their offence going but Concordia's Alexandros Soumakis intercepted the puck and scored a short-handed goal for the first tally of the game.
This goal sparked the Stingers as they scored four more goals within the next ten minutes. Philippe Hudon picked up two to bring his total to nine on the season, the second goal half way through the third and an empty netter with less than five minutes left in the game. Sandwiched by Hudon's goals, Scott Oke and Charles-Eric Legare each picked up one of their own.
The Voyageurs put everything they could to the net, outshooting Concordia eighteen to seven in the final period. Miguel Sullivan put up a fight in an attempt to earn a shutout but Laurentian was finally able to put the puck past him. Bradley MacDonald scored his first of the season with just under three minutes left in the game.
Concordia picked up their seventh win of the season, handing Laurentian their ninth loss, four coming in the last six games. The Voyageurs will play their last game of the semester on Saturday, December 5th at 4:00pm against the UQTR Patriotes.

Ming Tallies Three Points in Win Over Toronto
KINGSTON, Ont. (December 4, 2015) - The Gaels (9-4-0) took a 3-1 win versus Toronto as Eric Ming scored twice and added an assist on Friday night at the Memorial Centre.
Queen's came into the game on a two game losing streak. Last weekend they fell to McGill 3-2 behind a last minute goal by the Redmen. Toronto was coming off a Thursday night loss at UOIT 6-3.
Game Flow
Each team had their chances in the opening frame, but the Gaels were able to capitalize on their early momentum. Eric Ming (Williamsville, Ont.) blasted a slapshot past Blues goaltender Andrew Hunt to take a 1-0 lead 12:22 into the game. The Gaels kept the offensive play going through the period as they fired 18 shots on net in the first 20 minutes alone.
Queen's momentum carried over to the second period and it was Ming once again with a marker five minutes in. He tipped home a high shot, but after a quit talk aside, the referees determined it was a good goal. It was Ming's seventh of the year, tying the team lead.
Looking to capitalize on early third period chances, the Varsity Blues were finally able to solve Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) and cut the score to 2-1. Toronto had the majority of the chances in the final frame, but eight minutes in, a four minute double minor penalty gave the Gaels the chance they needed. Three minutes into the man advantage, Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) beat the Blues goalie short-side and top corner for his third of the year.
Queen's took a late-game penalty, while Toronto pulled their goalie for the 6 on 4 advantage. Solid defence and a huge save by Bailie kept the game at bay as the home team held onto their 3-1 lead and took the win.
By the Numbers
33 - shots on net by Queen's in the first 40 minutes alone
7 - goals on the year by Eric Ming and Patrick McGillis (Calgary, Alta.), leading the team
