Lions hand Warriors first loss in nine games
Former Warrior and current York Lions forward Justin Larson (Buckhorn) might not have found the scoresheet in his return to the Columbia Icefield Arena, but his teammates ensured that he did leave with the most important souvenir – a win.
The Lions got goals from Mitch VanTeeling and Colton Vannucci, as they snapped Waterloo's 8-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory over the Warriors on Friday night.
Colin Behenna (Waterloo) scored the only goal for the hosts, who suffered their first loss since November 14. Waterloo sees their record fall to 12-9-0 on the season, while the Lions improved to 13-6-3 – climbing back into first place in the OUA West in the process.
Chris Perugini earned the win for the Lions, kicking aside 31 shots for his division-leading 11th victory of the season. Mike Morrison (Hamilton) made 28 saves for the Warriors – many of the highlight-reel variety – in the defeat.
After Larson was acknowledged in a pregame ceremony, the big forward and his Lions came out of the gates searching for an early goal. It was the former Warrior who had the best chance from the left faceoff dot, but Morrison robbed him with the glove hand. It was one of a number of big saves the Waterloo keeper made in the first period to keep the game scoreless after 20 minutes.
The Lions broke through early in the second frame though, as their 3rd-ranked power play went to work. VanTeeling tipped a point shot right in front of Morrison, forcing the Warriors keeper into a gorgeous right pad save. But the rebound lay right there for VanTeeling, who made no mistake to put York up 1-0.
The game remained a one-goal affair until mid-way through the third, when Vannucci crossed in the high slot and beat Morrison to make it 2-0. With Larson in the box later in the period, Behenna smacked home a Stephen Silas (Georgetown) rebound to draw the Warriors back to within one, but that's as close as they would get.
The Warriors will now embark on a three-game road trip, starting right in their own backyard – Waterloo will visit the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, January 23 at 7:30pm.

Yuill scores winning goal in his 100th game
NORTH BAY, Ont. – Cameron Yuill's 100th OUA conference game was one to remember as he scored the game-winning goal in UOIT's 5-3 road win over the Nipissing Lakers.
The Ridgebacks' 13th victory of the season also marks a program high for wins in a season previously set by the 2010-11 team.
Tied 2-2 after 40 minutes, UOIT would dominate the third period outscoring Nipissing 3-1. Adam Campagnolo (Waterloo, Ont.) opened up scoring three minutes into the period, followed by Yuill's (Wellington, Ont.) third of the season at 10:59. Jake Logan (Napanee, Ont.) and Alex Yuill (Wellington, Ont.) had assists on Yuill's goal.
Nipissing managed to cut the lead to just one with four minutes remaining but Jesse Stoughton (Bobcaygeon, Ont.), who scored the overtime winner against Concordia last Saturday, scored at 18:12 to seal the Ridgeback victory.
Defender Jason Shaw (Belleville, Ont.) had his second straight multi-point game with one goal and two assists while captain Luke VanMoerkerke (Tillsonburg, Ont.) had two helpers. James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) scored his seventh goal of the season to put the Ridgebacks on the board.
Leading the offence for the Lakers was Dylan Staples who finished with one goal and an assist.
Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) picked up the win for UOIT stopping 20 Laker shots on goal. UOIT would outshoot Nipissing 28-23 with half of their shots coming in the third period.
UOIT (13-7-1) remains two points ahead of the Queen's Gaels (12-6-1) for fourth place and home ice advantage in the OUA eastern conference. Queen's defeated Laurentian (7-11-4) on Friday, who UOIT will match up against on Saturday night in Sudbury.

Gryphons lose 5-2 on the road versus No. 3-ranked McGill Redmen
MONTREAL, QC – The McGill Redmen have one of the top power play units in the country. The Guelph Gryphons took too many penalties. Not a good combination from a Gryphon perspective.
Friday night at McConnell Arena on the campus of McGill University, the Gryphons men's hockey team lost 5-2 to the No. 3-ranked McGill Redmen. Three of McGill's five goals were scored on the power play. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 12-9-0 on the season while McGill improves to 19-3-1.
McGill jumped out to an early lead Friday night thanks to a short-handed goal from Daniel Milne just over two minutes into the game. After a roughing call on the Gryphons, the Redmen would score their first of three power play goals on the night to take a 2-0 lead. This goal came from the country's leading scorer in McGill defenseman Samuel Labrecque. Labrecque would later pick up an assist and now has 39 points (15 G, 24 A) in 23 games.
Before the end of the opening period, the Gryphons would get on the board with a power play goal of their own thanks to their standout rookie forward, Dylan Gilbert. Gilbert extended his goal scoring streak to four games with his team-leading 10th goal of the season. The Oakville native and former member of the Evansville Icemen (ECHL) has now scored five goals in his last four games. The Gryphons trailed 2-1 after 20 minutes of play.
In the second period, Guelph would tie the game at 2-2 on Cody Thompson's seventh goal of the campaign. But McGill would score the next three goals, including a pair of power play goals just 61 seconds apart, to go on to the 5-2 victory.
"We were just too undisciplined tonight" said Gryphons head coach Shawn Camp. "When it was 5-on-5, we played well, were strong in the offensive zone and created plenty of chances. But you just can't take that many penalties against the best power play unit in the conference."
The Gryphons had a total of 36 minutes of penalties on 14 infractions. McGill finished the night 3-for-10 on the power play. The go-ahead goal came on a 5-on-3. The goal that made it 4-2 came on a 5-on-4.
Andrew D'Agostini made 37 saves on the night in the losing effort. Sean Robertson was the lone Gryphon to record a multi-point game, assisting on both Guelph goals
The Gryphons will not have much time to dwell on the loss as they will be right back in action on Saturday night. After staying the night in Montreal on Friday, the Gryphons will hit the road at 9am Saturday morning to make the five to six hour drive from Montreal to Toronto as they get set for their Saturday night matchup with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. That game will mark the first meeting of the season between the Gryphons and Varsity Blues. Last season, Guelph eliminated U of T from the postseason when they met up in the OUA West Semi-finals. Puck drop for Saturday night's game is scheduled for 7:30pm at Varsity Arena.

Badgers lose heartbreak in double OT
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University men's hockey team (6-12-5 OUA) lost a heartbreaker in double OT by the score of 4-3 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves (5-12-4 OUA) Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Lakehead opened the scoring 8:13 into the opening period as Dylan Butler and Jake Wright setup Sam Schutt for his fourth goal of the season.
The Badgers answered with the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead. Ryan Purvis (Orillia, ON) setup Chris Maniccia (St. Catharines, ON) who registered his seventh goal of the campaign 1:26 into the second period. At the midway mark of the second, Sammy Banga (Windsor, ON) beat Lakehead starter Devin Green with Maniccia and Skylar Pacheco (Kitimat, BC) adding the assists.
That lead would be short lived as Lakehead's Jake Ringuette tied it 2-2 just 11 seconds later with a powerplay marker. Billy Jenkins and Jay Gilbert collected the assists.
Seven and a half minutes into the third period, Brock would regain the one-goal lead as Dan Tanel (Mississauga, ON) and Maniccia setup Patrick Volpe (Burlington, ON) for his first goal of the season.
Once again, Lakehead quickly answered to tie it 3-3 with a goal from Wright just 42 seconds later at 8:16.
After nothing was solved in the first overtime, it went to a 3 on 3 double OT. 2:34 into the second overtime, Jenkins and Kelin Ainsworth setup Linden Springer in the slot, who buried a shot past Brock starter Clint Windsor (Hamilton, ON) for the game winner.
Windsor registered 39 saves in the loss while the Thunderwolves Devin Green collected 29 saves for the victory.
The Badgers return to action January 27th at 7:15pm when they host the Guelph Gryphons at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.

Ravens edge Concordia in overtime for road win
(MONTREAL, QC) — Quality penalty-killing and timely goaltending were the order of the day for the Carleton men's hockey team on Friday night in Montreal, as the Ravens edged the Concordia Stingers 4-3 in overtime. Captain Joey West (Ottawa, ON) scored the overtime winner for Carleton (16-5-0), which let a 3-1 third period lead slip against the feisty Stingers (8-11-4).
"The outcome tonight was deserved based on the effort of the PK guys," said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston, whose team killed off all six of Concordia's power plays, including one in the final moments to secure the win. "It was the first time in a while that we really had the play taken to us (in the second)."
Carleton opened the scoring just 3:57 into Friday's game, as Connor McLaren (Metcalfe, ON) rapped a rebound past Concordia netminder Robin Billingham for his first goal as a Raven.
Forward Mitch Zion (Manotick, ON) continued his red-hot start to 2016 some two minutes later, redirecting a Joey West feed beyond Billingham's glove to double the Carleton lead.
Concordia surged back, and David Hunter beat Ravens goaltender Pat Killeen (Corkery, ON) with a short-handed effort to cut the hosts' deficit in half.
The middle frame was scoreless despite a number of chances at both ends. As the second period progressed, Concordia began taking the game to Carleton—Killeen had to be sharp to turn aside 16 shots and maintain the Ravens' lead through 40 minutes.
David Weckworth (Kanata, ON) restored Carleton's two-goal cushion three minutes into the third period, as he rifled a shot through traffic and past Billingham to make it 3-1.
However with the hosts riding a wave of momentum off the back of a pair of third period power plays, Carleton conceded twice in the span of 1:12 and the game was locked at three. Domenic Beauchemin and captain Olivier Hinse had the goals for Concordia.
After a critical penalty kill in the final seconds of regulation and early stages of overtime, Carleton took to the offensive. Ravens defenceman Derek Brown (Toronto, ON) sped away down the left wing before centring the puck for Joey West, who made no mistake, one-timing the feed beyond Billingham's outstretched glove to claim both points.
"It's not the way we wanted it—we gave up more chances than usual—but it's two points," said West, who has registered 10 points in five games since returning from the December break. "We have a tight group, and if we stick to our systems we get the results we want more times than not—today we showed a lot of character as a group."
Pat Killeen earned the victory, his sixth of the season, with a 39-save performance between the pipes for Carleton.
The two teams will meet again in Ottawa on Saturday night on the back-end of the home-and-home.
"They've got a very talented forward corps, and we expect them to come out aggressively with a very offensive game plan," said Coach Johnston, whose Ravens team is now 9-1 on the road this season. "We've got to be a little more disciplined and stick to our game tomorrow."

Game Flow

The game was quiet offensively from there with the Gaels putting 14 shots on net.
The second period gave the Gaels their first big break of the game on the powerplay. Ryan Bloom (Calgary, Alta.) converted with the extra man and scored his fourth of the year, tying the game at one. Laurentian converted on a powerplay of their own 10 minutes later to jump back in front. Despite two more powerplays in the period, it took a 5 on 5 chance for the Gaels to tie things up. 15:01 into the period Patrick McGillis (Calgary) scored his 10th goal of the season to tie the game up at 2-2 going into the final frame.
Queen's fired another 18 shots on the Laurentian net in the final period, and one of them crossed the goal line and gave the Gaels a 3-2 lead. Just over 12 minutes in, Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) put away his sixth goal and put the team up 3-2. They shut the door the rest of the way, and came away with a comeback win to snap their three game losing streak.
