Rams rebound with big win over UQTR
TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams showcased a full team effort on Saturday afternoon, an effort that saw Troy Passingham lead the charge to victory as the Rams earned their first victory of the year with a 2-1 win over the UQTR Patriotes.
Luke Cairns (Stoney Creek, Ont.) would open the scoring for the Rams, after splitting the defense; Cairns lifted a backhand up and over the glove of Patriotes goaltender Sebastien Auger to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead.
Passingham (Mississauga, Ont.) and Auger looked to be in mid-season form throughout Saturday's battle, a game that saw a number of quality chances but very little scoring. Both goaltenders kept their teams in the game and their stellar play resulted in a scoreless second period and the low scoring final.
The line of Jason Kelly, Sam Blanchet and Mark Spadafora bruised their way onto the scoreboard for the Rams after playing a tough and physical game all afternoon. Kelly (Toronto), who seemed to attract quite a bit of attention from the Patriotes, rushed down the wing and fired a perfect placed shot to beat Auger far side to give the Rams a 2-0 lead early in the third.
The Patriotes would battle back however as Passignham's perfection was finally spoiled by a screened shot from the point, one which came from the stick of Martin Lefebvre, who scored his second of the year and his fifth point in two games.
With the lead down to one, UQTR pressed hard in the dying minutes. Passingham would have none of it and showed why he started every game for Rams last season, stopping all but one of the 45 shots he faced to secure the Rams first win of the 2015-16 campaign.
After a tough loss to the Concordia Stingers just a day earlier on Friday night, the Rams showed no signs of fatigue, but rather an abundance of energy, and looked to be a much more confident and composed group.
"We had to rebound and come in today with a better game after last night," said Ryerson coach Graham Wise. "Getting the first goal was huge, I think every person in the room knew they could be better and knew they were up against a pretty good hockey team, so I give the credit to the players."
A player that arguably deserves the most amount of credit was indeed the 6'5 monster Passingham between the pipes, and after spending the first game of the season in the role of a backup, he showed Saturday why he's a starter.
"I felt great, I knew we had a tough game (Friday) and I knew I had to be focused and sharp out there," said Passingham. "You obviously want to play every game you can and when you're told you're going to play, then you have to play good, and that's what I did tonight."
The Rams go one and one to start off the 2015-16 season. They host another tough opponent on Thursday when they welcome the defending OUA champions, the Guelph Gryphons to the MAC. Puck drop scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Carleton edged by McGill in season opener
(OTTAWA, ON) — A shining CIS debut from freshman Brett Welychka (London, ON) and a pair of powerplay goals weren't enough for the Ravens men's hockey team on Friday night, as Carleton dropped its season opener 5-4 to the visiting McGill Redmen.
"It was a good effort, but good efforts don't beat great teams, and they're obviously very well-coached," said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston post-game. "We have to find ways to win these kinds of games, hopefully we can learn from it."
Carleton (0-1-0) outplayed McGill (2-0-0) for long stretches of the first period, and deservedly opened the scoring at the 9:00 mark, when a Jeremie Fraser (Cantley, QC) wrist shot bounced off Ryan Van Stralen (Prescott, ON) and past McGill netminder Jacob Gervais-Chouinard.
Ravens assistant captain Michael McNamee (Perth, ON) then doubled the lead on a powerplay just over three minutes later, slotting home a rebound on the powerplay.
The high-flying Redmen came storming back early in the middle stanza, as two-time CIS player-of-the-year Liam Heelis cut the Carleton lead in half just 33 seconds into the second period. A pretty deke from Mathieu Pompei at the 5:53 mark then levelled things at two.
McGill began the third period with another early marker when Samuel Labrecque rifled a one-timer past Ravens goaltender Patrick Killeen (Corkery, ON) just 21 seconds into the final frame.
Carleton rookie Brett Welychka then drew the Ravens back on level terms at the 6:14 mark, blasting a one-timer past Gervais-Chouinard on the powerplay.
A David Rose wrist shot evaded Killeen with less than seven minutes remaining to restore McGill's one-goal lead, and the Redmen would not relinquish it. Liam Heelis added his second of the night into an empty net at 18:40, rendering Welychka's second goal of the night at 19:16 useless.
Killeen was saddled with the loss in net for Carleton after giving up five goals on 26 shots. Gervais-Chouinard picked up the win for McGill, turning aside 31 of the 35 shots he faced.
Highly-touted freshman blueliner Jeremie Fraser had quite the CIS debut on Friday night for Carleton, assisting all four of the Ravens goals on the night. The aforementioned Welychka earned 2nd star honours for his two-goal debut performance. Connor Boland (Whitby, ON), Brett Gustavsen (Scarborough, ON), Brent Norris (Ottawa, ON), Curtis Meighan (Ottawa, ON), and Alex Boivin (Ottawa, ON) also made their CIS debuts for Carleton.
The Ravens will be back in action at home next weekend in search of their first win of 2015-16. The RMC Paladins (1-2-0) will pay a visit to the Carleton Ice House on Friday, before the Laurentian Voyageurs (0-0-0) roll into town for a Saturday night showdown. Puck drop for both games is slated for 7 p.m., with general admission tickets starting at $5.

Blues bounce back with big win
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team notched a big 6-2 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Saturday night (Oct. 10) at Varsity Arena.
Third-year forward Russell Turner scored two goals and added one assist, while team captain Andrew Doyle also had two goals on the night. Fourth-year veteran Patrick Marsh and rookie forward Mathew Campagna both had one goal and two assists in the victory.
The Stingers opened the scoring just 43 seconds into the contest when Frederic Roy one-timed a nice 2-on-1 pass past Blues net minder Michael Nishi.
Toronto got on the board midway through the frame when Campagna dropped the puck to Turner, who wired it into the top corner. Concordia answered right back however, finishing off a similar 2-on-1 play with a Alexandros Soumakis goal. The Stingers led 2-1 after 20 minutes.
The Blues tied things up just 21 seconds into the second period when Marsh fired a shot five-hole right off a face-off for U of T's first power play marker of the season. Doyle then gave the Blues the lead less than two minutes later, finishing off a nice cross-crease pass from Campagna. Toronto was up 3-2 heading into the final frame.
U of T notched another two quick goals to open the third period. Campagna whacked in a rebound at the side of the net on the power play 2:25 into the third, and Turner finished off a nice 2-on-1 chance with Marsh just over two minutes later.
Up 5-2 with 3:30 remaining on the clock, Concordia pulled their goalie and with two Toronto players in the penalty box, had a 6-on-3 opportunity. The Blues stood tall though as Doyle stripped the Stinger of the puck and skated it down the ice for the empty netter.
Nishi posted 34 saves in Toronto's first win of the season.
The Varsity Blues return to the ice next Friday, October 16 as they travel to Waterloo, Ont., to take on the Warriors. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Dundas scores four as Windsor dominates Warriors
Rookie forward Justice Dundas scored four goals and registered his first CIS hat-trick to lead the Windsor Lancers to a dominating 8-1 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday night at South Windsor Arena.
The win improves the Lancer record to 2-0 in the early season, while the loss drops to Warriors back to 1-1 on the year.
Five additional Lancers that included Kenny Bradford, rookie Tyson Ness, Mike Christou, Ryan Green, and Steve Anthony had a pair of points in the victory, while the Lancers went 4-for-7 on the power play.
Andrew Smith scored the only Warriors goal in the losing cause, while goaltender Mike Morrison turned aside 42 of Windsor's 50 shots on a busy evening. Lancer goaltender Michael Doan made 30 saves in net to earn the win.
The game was knotted at 1-1 well beyond the mid-way point of the second period before a late second period flurry, highlighted by Dundas completing his hat trick, made the score 4-1 Windsor after 40 minutes.
The third period was nearly a carbon copy of the second, as the Lancers exploded for four more goals in a span of 6:05 late in the game. In total, the Warriors were assessed 26 minutes in penalties, to the Lancers' 14.
The Blue & Gold will hit the road for the first time in the 2015-16 season as they head to Montreal next weekend for a double header series against the Concordia Stingers. Stay tuned to www.goLancers.ca for broadcasting information as it becomes available.
