Gaels pick up tenth win of the season with victory over Ryerson
KINGSTON (December 5, 2015) - The Gaels (10-4-0) scored three goals in the third period en-route to the win versus the Ryerson Rams (8-9-0).
Both teams were coming off of Friday night wins. Queen's topped Toronto, and Ryerson bested UOIT.
Game Flow
The first period started off with the Gaels a couple steps behind. Most of the chances in the opening 10 minutes went to the Rams, but once again solid defense and goaltending kept the home team in it. Late in the frame, Ryerson converted on their first powerplay of the night. Aaron Armstrong put away a rebound right in front to give his team the opening goal, taking a 1-0 lead into the second period.
The middle frame was a very physical from the get go, with big hits coming from each team. 2:25 in the Gaels were able to capitalize on the man advantage. Slater Doggett (Oakville, Ont.) whacked the puck out of mid-air on a rebouncd to put the puck past the Rams goalie. With just under five minutes to play in the period, the Rams would score on a 3 on 2 and take a one goal lead. Just as the period entered its final minute Spencer Abraham's (Campbellville, Ont.) shot from the point would be tipped in by Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) for his team leading eighth goal of the season, bringing the game to a 2-2 score going into the final frame.
Right off the hop the Gaels had some solid momentum and were able to jump out to a 3-2 lead. Ryan Bloom (Calgary, Alta.) would score in the first minute of the period and Ming would tally an assist on the goal, his fifth point and third assist in the last two games. The physicality did not let up in the period as the teams shared hits back and forth for the full 20 minutes of the third. With just 1:30 left in the game, the Rams would pull their goalie for the extra attacker. The Gaels would take advantage of the empty goal as Patrick McGillis (Calgary) and Steve Trojanovic (Burlington, Ont.) would both score one and give the Gaels a three goal lead.
That would be the end of it as the Gaels would win 5-2 and sweep the visiting Toronto teams this week. They will now take their 10-4-0 record to the unofficial second half of the season.

8 - goals on the year by Eric Ming and Patrick McGillis to lead the team

Ravens soar past Paladins in Kingston
(OTTAWA, ON) — The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team closed out the 2015 portion of its schedule on a positive note on Saturday night, crushing the RMC Paladins 7-1 at Constantine Arena in Kingston.
Brett Welychka (London, ON) tallied a team-high four points (2G, 2A) for Carleton (12-4-0), who put the game away on a 2:56 first period stretch which saw the Ravens beat RMC (1-15-3) netminder Matt Murphy three times.
"It was good to see different lines contribute offensively, I thought we were rolling pretty good," said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston post-game. "Our special teams did a good job again, with a power play goal and our PK working real well."
After a relatively quiet start, Carleton exploded for three goals in less than three minutes just past the halfway mark of the first period. Assistant captain Mitch Zion (Manotick, ON) rifled a one-timer past Murphy for the opener, which was followed in short order by Welychka's first of the night. Brent Norris (Ottawa, ON) then polished off the trio of first period goals at the 14:44 mark with a pretty bar-down shot that beat Murphy blocker-side.
Well-worked second period goals from Mike McNamee (Perth, ON) and Ryan Van Stralen (Prescott, ON) put the game on ice for Carleton.
Thanks in large part to inconsistent officiating both ways, the third period devolved into a scrum- and misconduct-filled affair. Corey Durocher (Ottawa, ON) picked a corner for Carleton's sixth goal of the night, and Welychka rattled a slapshot off the post and in to round out the Ravens' offence on the night.
Bennett Huber scored the lone goal for the hosts inside the final two minutes, chipping a loose puck past a down-and-out Pat Killeen (Corkery, ON) to spoil the Ravens netminder's shutout.
"It got a little chippy once the game got out of hand, and discipline is something we're going to have to focus on over the break," said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston, whose team saw defenceman Jeremie Fraser (Cantley, QC) ejected. "At the same time, it's good to see guys stand up for each other — McNamee gets hit, they go after him, and our guys step in — that's good."
Carleton freshman forward Brett Welychka moved into a tie for second in the conference scoring race with his four-point outburst in Kingston.
"It's obviously not easy to come into a (small) rink like this, but the boys did a good job coming off the hop like that, scoring three early," said Welychka, who leads the Ravens in assists (19) and points (29). "Going into the break at 12-4, we can't ask for much better than that — we have high expectations entering the second half."

Lakehead edged by York in double OT
The Lakehead Thunderwolves were edged 3-2 by the West Division-leading York Lions in double overtime at the Canlan Ice Sports Centre in North York on Saturday night.
Lakehead drew first blood late in the opening period when Brennen Dubchak beat Lions' goalie Chris Perugini from in close with only 48 seconds left on the clock. E.J. Faust and Carson Dubchak were credited with the assists.
Usually, a goal late in a period gives a team momentum, but York came out strong in the second and took it back with two quick goals by Trevor Peterson and Kyle Campbell in the first 2:26 of the middle frame.
The Wolves responded when Tyler Kunz blasted the puck past Perugini at the 5:16 mark after Lakehead caught the Lions in a bad line change, with Dylan Butler and Cody Alcock picking up the helpers.
Despite a third period with plenty of end-to-end action and some good scoring opportunities for both sides, Devin Green stood tall in the Wolves' net as did Perugini for York, and the game was headed into overtime.
The first five-minutes of extra time with four skaters aside was played close to the vest, and neither squad was able to generate a good scoring opportunity.
The game opened up considerably in the second overtime with three-on-three play, but it looked like a shootout was imminent until York's Reid Jackman knocked home a rebound with only one second remaining.
The Thundewolves went 0-for-6 on the power play while York went 0-for-3.
Shots on goal in the game were 43-38 for the Lions.
Lakehead picked up a point for the O.T. loss and ended the fall semester with a record of 2-10-4 in OUA play and 4-12-5 overall.
The Wolves next games will be against Guelph when they host the Gryphons in the annual Christmas Challenge at the Fort William Gardens on December 29th and 30th.
