Lucky Number Seven: Warriors win seventh straight
Call it a magnificent seventh.
The Waterloo Warriors got goals from six different players, and defencemen Joe Underwood (Canton) and Stephen Silas (Georgetown) pitched in with two assists apiece, as the black and gold earned their seventh straight win with a 6-2 decision over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Friday night at the Columbia Icefield Arena.
Riley Sonnenburg (Cambridge), Tommy Tsicos (Barrie), Colin Behenna (Waterloo), Daniel Perigo (Truro), Joey Champigny (East Angus), and Mitchell Smith (Plainfield) all found twine for Waterloo, who improves to 11-8-0 on the season. Mike Morrison (Hamilton) kicked away 34 shots in the victory.
On the other side of the ice, the Voyageurs lost their sixth straight contest to fall to 6-10-4. Brent Pederson and Graham Yeo scored for Laurentian, while Joel Vienneau stopped 31 shots in a losing cause.
The Warriors looked every bit the team on a hot streak in the first period, but Vienneau's heroics kept the game scoreless through 20 minutes. But Waterloo would break through early in the second, as Sonnenburg roofed a wicked wrister past Vienneau's short side to make it 1-0 Waterloo.
After Pederson squared the score at 1-1, Waterloo got back-to-back power play goals from Tsicos and Behenna – the latter of the highlight variety – to head into the third leading 3-1.
Yeo drew the Voyageurs back to within a goal early in the third, and his marker seemed to ignite the visitors. But Perigo snuffed out the Laurentian attack with an incredible solo shorthanded effort, fending off all five Voyageur defenders to slide a backhand home, making it 4-2 for the Warriors.
Champigny's fifth of the season made it 5-2, and Smith scored his first career CIS goal into an empty net to round out the scoring.
The Warriors will now look to make it eight wins in a row tomorrow night when they host the Nipissing Lakers. Puck drop from the Columbia Icefield Arena is slated for 7pm.

Labrecque nets game-winner as Redmen muzzle Paladins
MONTREAL -- Defenceman Samuel Labrecque broke a tie at 17:17 of the third period as No.2-ranked McGill skated to a 3-1 victory over visiting Royal Military College before a capacity crowd in the 14th annual McGill Management Winter Carnival game at McConnell Arena, Friday.
The Redmen are 14-0 lifetime in their annual carnival game and the result improved McGill's lifetime record to 63-8-4 overall against the Paladins.
John Livingston had given the visitors a surprisng 1-0 lead on the power-play at 7:08 of the opening period but vetaran Liam Heelis evened the score with his ninth at the 46-second mark of the middle period. Heelis was also in on Labrecque's deciding marker, which came on a 5-on-3 power play and was a one-timer to the top-right corner.
It was the third winning tally of the season for Labrecque, who also netted half a dozen winners last year to share the CIS lead in that department. The senior rearguard from Granby, Que., leads the CIS scoring race with 14-22-36, one goal shy of the team's single-season record for blueliners. That standard was accomplished in 1981-82 when Gilles Hudon tallied 15 in 24 games for the Redmen.
"I thought that the guys did a good job of sticking to the game plan," said acting head coach David Urquhart, handling the bench instead of Kelly Nobes, who was home serving a suspension from the league after incurring a game misconduct for arguing with a referee in last week's 5-1 victory at Nipissing. "We were playing well on 5-on-5 and told the guys in the intermission that we would just wear them down and take advantage of any penalties. We finally got our chance late in the game and the guys capitalized."
Earning the victory between the pipes for McGill was freshman Joe Fleschler of Summit, N.J., who made 22 saves and collected his second career win. RMC's Matt Murphy made 35 saves in a losing cause and dropped to 3-9.
"It was nice to see Joe get the win," said Urquhart, who has guided the Redmen to a 4-1 record over the last two years when replacing Nobes behind the bench. "It was only his second career start and he didn't get rattled despite giving up an early goal and playing in front of our largest crowd of the season. As a rookie, it was a challenging situation for him and he shut the door and showed a lot of composure, especially with all the power-plays that they had."
McGill, which had a 38-23 edge in shots, erased six of seven shorthanded scenarios and went 2-for-5 with the man-advantage.
McGill leads the 19-team OUA with an impressive 18-2-1 record but only sit two points ahead of second-place UQTR (17-3-1). With seven games remaining before playoffs, the Redmen are in contention to break the school's single-season record for wins, accomplished in the 2010-11 campaign when they posted a 24-2-2 dossier. They will travel to the nation's capital on Saturday for a key encounter against third-place Carleton (13-5), which sits 11 points back with three games in hand.
RMC, which had their two-game win streak snapped, dropped to 3-16-3. They will play at UOIT (11-7-1) in Oshawa on Jan. 29.

Spurred on by three unanswered goals in the third period, the Lakehead Thunderwolves downed the Ryerson Rams 5-2 in front of 2274 fans at the Fort William Gardens on Friday night.
Billy Jenkins gave Lakehead an early lead on a goal assisted by Jake Wright and Cody Alcock with the Wolves on the power play 4:49 into the game.
Alcock, Lakehead's leading scorer, had to be taken off the ice later in the period after he suffered what appeared to be a serious knee injury and was lost for the night and possibly much longer.
Ryerson's Jamie Lewis evened the score at the 10:53 mark of the first while the Rams were short-handed when he roofed a shot on Lakehead goalie Devin Green's glove side.
Kelin Ainsworth scored the only goal of the second period on a blast from the face-off circle that eluded Rams' netminder Taylor Dupuis with less than three minutes remaining. Jake Ringuette was credited with the assist.
Michael Fine tied the game early in the third while the Rams held a five-on-three advantage.
Jenkins got the game-winner on an odd-man rush set up by Ainsworth at 8:48, and Justin Sefton banged the puck past Dupuis while the Wolves had the extra man at the 14:15 mark. Jenkins and Ainsworth picked up the helpers, giving them each three points on the night.
Sefton found Carson Dubchak streaking up the right wing for an empty-netter to ice the game with just over a minute remaining.
Green was solid in the Lakehead net once again, turning aside 34 of the 36 shots he faced. The Wolves fired 31 shots on the Ryerson goal for the night.
The Molson Three Stars of the game were:
1. Kelin Ainsworth, Lakehead
2. Billy Jenkins, Lakehead
3. Devin Green, Lakehead
The two teams will take to the ice again tomorrow night beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Gaels stung by Concordia in 4-3 loss
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 15, 2016) - The Queen's Gaels men's hockey team had its three-game winning streak snapped at the Memorial Centre on Friday evening, falling to the Concordia Stingers by a score of 4-3. The Gaels (11-5-0) remain fifth in the OUA East conference, while the Stingers (8-9-3) move to within one win of the .500 mark with the win.
GAME FLOW
After a scoreless opening period, Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) made a couple of important saves early in the second frame to keep the game a stalemate. The Belleville, Ont. native robbed Charles Eric-Legare with a low pad save on a point-blank shot from the slot, which seemed to spark the Gaels to life soon after. The hosts took control of the game for the next few minutes with a couple of odd-man rushes as well as spending long periods of time in the Stingers zone. While the Gaels kept the Stingers hemmed in their own zone, they were unable to solve goalie Robin Billingham.
Off another Queen's scoring opportunity, Dany Potvin found himself on a breakaway after receiving a pass from Dominic Beauchemin, and made no mistake, lifting a back-hand shot over the shoulder of Bailie and under the cross-bar to open the scoring at the 9:10 mark of the second. The hosts, however, would respond just over five minutes later.
Shortly following a Gaels power-play, Queen's was able to maintain possession in the Stingers zone, and a slap shot from the point resulted in a scramble in front of Billingham. The puck slipped out to Eric Ming (Williamstown, Ont.) in the slot, and the sophomore forward put a wrist-shot past Billingham for his team-leading 10th marker of the season.
Ryan Bloom (Calgary, Alta.) and Steve Trojanovic (Burlington, Ont.) each drew assists on the game-tying marker. The score would remain 1-1 heading into the final period of play.
Bailie made a superb blocker save on Stingers captain Olivier Hinse within the first minute of the final period, and came up with two more saves on a Stinger power-play to keep the game even.
Then the teams exchanged four goals in less than five minutes. The Stingers began the mini scoring spree on a quick shot by Raphael Lafontaine off a pass from the corner, which allowed the visitors to re-take the lead. Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.) answered for Queen's on a long wrist-shot from just inside the blue line that squeaked past Billingham, and Alex Stothart (Ottawa) gave the hosts their first lead of the contest at 3-2 just a minute and a half later. The Ottawa native banged in a rebound off a point shot from Abraham to put Queen's momentarily ahead.
The lead lasted just over a minute however, as Scott Oke slipped the puck past Bailie after a rush down the right wing to notch the game at 3-3. Lafontaine then picked up his second marker of the evening and the game-winner, deflecting a point shot past Bailie to give Concordia the lead with just under nine minutes left in regulation.
Bailie stopped 38 of 42 shots in the loss, while Billingham tallied a formidable 44 saves on 47 shots to earn the victory for Concordia.

With three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes at the Campus Ice Centre on Friday, UQTR defeated UOIT 6-2 to improve to 17-3-1.

The league's top offence was led by Carl-Antoine Delisle who recorded a hat-trick scoring a goal in every period. Mathieu Lemay also had a three-point night with a trio of assists while Anthony Verret had two goals.
