Schoenmakers tally the difference in Golden Hawks win
TORONTO (November 26, 2015) – A second period powerplay goal by Derek Schoenmakers proved to be the difference on Thursday night as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams 3-1 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
TORONTO (November 26, 2015) – A second period powerplay goal by Derek Schoenmakers proved to be the difference on Thursday night as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams 3-1 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Schoenmakers, a native of Kitchener, Ont., scored the game winner, his ninth goal of the season, with under two minutes to play in the second period to pull the purple and gold to within a game of .500 on the year. Laurier now owns a 6-7-0 mark, good for seventh overall in the OUA West division.
Also scoring for the Hawks were rookies Will Cook of Port Stanley, Ont., and Christian Mroczkowski of Wellesley, Ont. Cook, who scored on a shorthanded penalty shot, recorded the first goal of his CIS career while Mroczkowski extended his point streak to three games with a third period tally to ice the contest.
Michael Fine of Toronto, scored the Rams only goal on the night, a powerplay marker early in the third period.
In goal, Colin Furlong of Cambridge, Ont., started his second consecutive game and earned the victory as he stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced. His performance raised his save percentage this season to 0.919, eighth-best in the OUA
Troy Passingham of Mississauga, Ont., took the loss as he stopped 29 of the 32 shots he faced. The defeat drops Ryerson's record to 7-7-0 on the year.
The Hawks, who are riding a two-game winning streak, will look to extend that to three games when they host the Windsor Lancers (7-5-2) on Saturday, November 28. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
NOTES: Laurier sweeps the season series with Ryerson after recording a 3-2 win on home ice back on November 5…the victory improves the Hawks road record to 2-6 on the year.
