UOIT wins in Hodgins' CIS coaching debut
OTTAWA, Ont. – Curtis Hodgins picked up a win in his CIS coaching debut as the UOIT men's hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over the Carleton Ravens Friday night in Ottawa.
Friday's game was a first round playoff rematch from one season ago in which Carleton swept the Ridgebacks 2-0.
The game looked like a playoff game early on as the teams grinded out a scoreless first period, with goaltenders Brendan O'Neill (Ilderton, Ont.) and Francis Dupuis combining to make 19 saves.
The start of the second period saw an offensive barrage with three goals scored in less than a six-minute stretch. Mike Robinson (Stouffville, Ont.) opened up scoring for UOIT netting his first of the season with James Woodcroft (Milton, Ont.) and Ben Blasko (Kingston, Ont.) earning assists on the play. With the assist, Blakso has recorded at least one point in all seven-conference games played.
Carleton would quickly respond as Ryan Van Stralen slipped one past O'Neill for his fourth of the season.
The combination of Robinson and Woodcroft would hook up on their next shift, this time with Woodcroft being on the receiving end. The go-ahead goal was Woodcroft's third of the year.
With Carleton pressing for the game-tying goal, O'Neill made 17 saves in the second and third periods to maintain the UOIT lead.
At the other end of the ice, Adam Campagnolo (Waterloo, Ont.) added an insurance marker with just over seven minutes left in the game. Jason Shaw (Belleville, Ont.) drew an assist on the play, his fourth straight game with a point.
Carleton would outshoot UOIT 30-24, with O'Neill recording 29 saves in his fourth victory. The second year netminder has a .915 save percentage.
This marks the Ridgebacks second straight 3-1 road win after beating the previously No. 7 ranked Windsor Lancers by the same score last weekend.
UOIT sits in fifth place in the OUA eastern conference standings with a record of 4-3-0. The loss puts an end to Carleton's four-game win streak as they fall to 4-2-0.
Up next for UOIT is a home-and-home series with the Queen's Gaels. Game one will take place in Kingston on Friday, Nov. 6 followed by a rematch in Oshawa on Saturday night. Both games will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Pompei and Rose double dip as Redmen leave 'Wolves howling
MONTREAL -- Mathieu Pompei and David Rose each tallied twice and added a helper as No.4-ranked McGill skated to a 5-1 victory over the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, Friday, at McConnell Arena.
It matched the score of their only meeting last season, held Nov. 15 in Thunder Bay, Ont., and improved McGill's lifetime record to 5-7-1 against Lakehead.
The Redmen, who led 3-0 after one period and 4-1 after two, had a productive day on special teams, going 2-for-8 on the power-play and thwarting all eight Lakehead chances.
Rookie defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi of Mascouche, Que., scored his first career regular season marker with the Redmen and added assist.
Samuel Labrecque, another Redmen rearguard, collected a pair of assists and now leads all CIS blueliners in points with a 6-6-12 record in seven contests.
Lakehead forward Jake Wright, a sophomore from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., spoiled Jacob Gervais-Chounard's bid for shutout at 17:26 of the middle stanza. The 6-foot-1, 178-pound junior Redmen netminder from Sherbrooke, Que., made 27 saves for the victory. He improved to 6-0 on the season and 31-7 lifetime in regular season play.
Devin Green, a freshman from Calgary, was beaten five times on 36 shots and took the loss between the pipes for the Thunderwolves.
McGill, which is on a modest three-game win streak, improved to 6-1 on the season. They will host win Lakehead (0-5) again on Saturday at 5 pm
REDMEN RAP: McGill head coach Kelly Nobes improved his lifetime coaching record to 298-237-14 in 549 contests over his 15 years with CIS teams, including previous stints with RMC and Laurier. With the Redmen, Nobes has posted a 158-69-3 record in 230 games over six-plus seasons... Third-year netminder Karel St-Laurent has left the Redmen. He had only suited up for one regular season game, a 3-2 loss to Nipissing. Including preseason play, he posted a 1-4 record in five starts overall, with one shutout, a 3.88 goals-against average and an .881 save percentage... His departure means more playing time for rookie Joe Fleschler, a 6-foot-5, 212-pound native of Summit, N.J., who joined the Redmen late in training camp after two seasons with Drummondville of the QMJHL.

Patriotes' game: Warriors fall in Trois-Rivieres
Through their first six games of the season, the Waterloo Warriors men's hockey team had alternated wins and losses. Unfortunately for them, they were unable to continue that pattern on Friday night in Quebec.
Guillaume Asselin and Charles-David Beaudoin each scored two goals, and the Warriors lost consecutive games for the first time in 2015-16 as the UQTR Patriotes topped Waterloo 6-1 on Friday night in Trois-Rivieres.
Mitch Elliot (Prince George) added the only tally for the visitors, who fall to 3-4-0 on the season. With Mike Morrison (Hamilton) still shelved with an injury, Chris Hurry (Summerland) once again got the call between the pipes, turning aside 33 shots in a losing cause.
Meanwhile, the Patriotes – ranked 6th in the nation – improved to 5-1-1 with the win. Jeremy Beaudry contributed with a goal and two assists, and Sebastian Auger stopped 29 shots.
Beaudoin got the Patriotes on the board with a power play marker in an otherwise-even first period. UQTR added two more in a span of 2:50 in the second period to extend the lead to 3-0, and Auger kept the Warriors at bay with 10 saves in the middle frame.
Elliot responded with an unassisted marker when he scored from a sharp angle along the sideboards early in the third, making it 3-1. The goal seemed to spark the Warriors as they looked to close the gap further, but UQTR's Alexandre Leclerc ripped home a goal just past the period's midway mark to restore the three goal lead.
The Patriotes added two more late goals to round out the scoring, giving the Patriotes their first win over Waterloo since November 8, 2013.
Waterloo finishes their trip to Quebec on Saturday afternoon against the Concordia Stingers in Montreal. Puck drop is slated for 2pm, and the game will be broadcast live on oua.tv.
Notes: Waterloo went 0-for-3 on the power play, while UQTR went 2-for-8…Warriors forward Mitchell Smith (Plainfield) made his CIS debut…The Warriors were without goaltender Morrison and forward Chris Chappell (Pickering) due to injury, as well as defenceman Mike Moffat (Waterloo), who was serving a one-game suspension.

Brock wins third straight with victory over Varsity Blues
St Catharines, Ont. - The Brock University men's hockey team extended their win streak to three games as they defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues by the score of 4-1 Friday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
The Badgers open the scoring with 2:24 remaining in the first period as Sammy Banga (Windsor, Ont.) and Chris Maniccia (St. Catharines, Ont.) setup Skylar Pacheco (Kitimat, BC) for his third goal of the season.
Midway through the second period, the Badgers took a 2-0 lead with the man-advantage as Banga and Jake Cardwell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) set up Mitch Nardi (Hamilton, Ont.) for his fourth goal of the campaign. Just four minutes, later the Brock power play went to work again as Pacheco found Cardwell who buried a shot over the shoulder of Toronto starter Michael Nishi.

In goal, Brock starter Clint Windsor (Hamilton, Ont.) turned aside 23 of 24 shots he faced for the victory.Nishi collected 31 saves in the loss.

Stingers rally to defeat Golden Hawks
MONTREAL (October 30, 2015) – Despite a strong first period, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team suffered a disappointing 6-3 loss to the Concordia Stingers in Montreal on Friday.
The Golden Hawks (2-4-0) wasted no time getting on the board with their first goal coming in the first minute of play from Trevor Sauder (Tavistock, Ont.). Minutes later Sauder's goal was followed up by goals from Mitch Wright (Chesley, Ont.) and Matt Dupont (Milton, Ont.) past Concordia's rookie goalie Miguel Sullivan (Petit de Grat, N.S.) to put the Hawks in a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period.
A change in goalies for the Stingers (3-4-0) accompanied by a shift of momentum in the second period that saw the Hawks lead quickly evaporate. Concordia tallied three goals within the first seven minutes while the Hawks were stumped by third year goalie Robin Billingham (Ottawa).
The game remained tied until forward Dany Potvin (Napierville, Que.) put his second goal of the night past Hawk goalie Vinny Merante (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) on a Stingers power play to take a 4-3 lead.
The final period wouldn't provide a return in shift of momentum in the Hawks favour, and the Stingers recorded two more goals to seal a 6-3 victory over the Golden Hawks.
Laurier will try to rebound from the loss on Saturday afternoon when they face the UQTR Patriotes in Trois Rivieres. Game time is set for 4 p.m. and can be seen live on OUA.tv.

TORONTO - The Ryerson Rams fought off a late third period push to preserve a 6-4 victory over the York Lions Friday night.
A one sided affair through 40 minutes had the Rams up 5-1 early in the third period. Three unanswered goals by the Lions would turn this one into an edge of your seat finish. The one goal margin was as close as the lions would get in this one as Rams starting goaltender Troy Passingham went on to shut the door and give the Rams their second straight victory.
The Rams got off to an incredible start when captain Michael Fine found a loose puck in front to put the Rams up 1-0 just over a minute in. The Rams captain has been battling injuries throughout the first five games of this season and his early first period goal was his first point of the 2015-16 season. Fine finally lit up the scoresheet Friday night, finishing the night with three points, a goal and two assists.
"I think it was just a matter of time," said Fine. "I've been battling through some injuries to start the year and it's a process. Some nights the legs just feel good and tonight was one of those nights."
The Rams went on to strike again in the first period, this time on a power play goal from defenseman Keevin Cutting, whose first of the year gave the Rams a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
The second period would bring more early success for the Rams. First year Aaron Armstrong sent a pass in front to Joel Wigle, who made no mistake on the shot, beating Lions starting goaltender Chris Perguini just 29 seconds into the frame.
A power play goal from Lions forward Trevor Petersen shaved the lead back down to two, but the Rams would continue to show some power play magic of their own. Cutting scored his second of the night on a back door tap in to restore the three goal lead heading into the final period.
The Rams once again made the Lions pay on the power play with another early third period goal, which came off the pants of Lucas Froese. It wasn't the prettiest goal but gave the Rams a controlling 5-1 lead.
Heading into Friday night's game the Lions outscored their opponents 10-1 in third periods this season, and proved once again Friday that they are as dangerous as ever in the final 20 minutes.
Penalty trouble for the Rams gave the Lions an opening, who scored back to back power play goals off the sticks of Petersen and Greg Milner. With the lead now down to two, Milner took matters into his own hands and wristed one past Passingham, making the score 5-4 with a long eight minutes remaining.
Wigle would hit an empty net as the Rams went on to avoid a monstrous collapse with a 6-4 win over the Lions.
The Rams credited their win to their quick start and after a full 60 minutes, Fine understood just how important that quick start was.
"We haven't had the greatest first periods to start the season," said Fine. "We were working hard but we weren't working smart. We just need to stick to our systems and work hard. We have a lot of hard workers in the room and we were able to come away with the win tonight."
The Rams look to build on the momentum from Friday night's win and look to get off to another quick start on Saturday night when they head to Brock University to take on the Badgers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15pm.

The Laurentian Voyageurs came back home and faced off against the Western Mustangs, scoring six straight goals to win the game 6-4.
Western began the game with a scoring opportunity and half way through the first period took the lead. David Corrente shot from the point with Trent Oullette picking up the rebound for the first goal of the game.

Second period continued with the Mustangs controlling the play. Three minutes in, Spenser Cobbold straight off the face-off and put a great wrist shot past Alain Valiquette. 3-0 Western.
Shortly after the Mustangs added to their lead, Matt Marantz passed it to Ouellette for his second on the night. Halfway through the game, the play began to change. Caleb Apperson put the puck towards the net where Brent Pederson picked up the pass behind the Western defence and made a couple moves to put the puck past the goalie. 4-1 Western.
Laurentian kept on the pressure and forced a turnover. Daniel Pachis backhanded the pass to a waiting Pederson left all alone in the front of the net, who knew exactly what to do for his second of the game. Less than a minute later, the Voyageurs won a quick face-off with Apperson shooting from the point again, this time being tipped into the net by Dylan Fitze. With two goals in less than a minute, Laurentian headed into the second intermission down by one goal.
The third period exemplified the intensity of both teams, as the play carried back and forth for most of the third. The Voyageurs' hard work had paid off, the pressure put on Western forced the Mustangs to play out of position. Blake Forslund put the puck to the front of the net for Nick Esposto to knock the puck just past the goalie. Laurentian tied up the game with just over five minutes left in the game.
Fitze forced a turnover in the neutral zone, skated down the ice to take a shot. Esposto put in the rebound to give Laurentian their first lead of the game with just over three minutes left. Fitze scored a last second, empty net goal to ice it.
The Voyageurs scored six unanswered goals in the second half of the game, taking the lead late in third as they handed Western their first loss of the season. Laurentian looks to keep their undefeated home record as the take on the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday, October 31 at Countryside Arena.Source: Laurentian Voyageurs
Gryphons sneak past Lakers in North Bay
It's been and up and down first six games of the OUA season for the Nipissing Lakes men's hockey team, but that doesn't mean it's been a bad start.
After two tough overtime losses to kick off the campaign, the Lakers came up with two big road wins to even their record, but at the end of a lengthy road trip, Nipissing was unable to stay hot, losing a pair last weekend.
Back on home ice and facing the Guelph Gryphons Friday night, the Lakers put in a quality 70 minute effort, but were unable to earn a second point, as they fell 3-2 in overtime to the Gryphons.
Battling a bit of the injury bug, Nipissing came up with a gutsy effort versus last year's CIS bronze medallists.
The shots didn't reflect the first period, as the Gryphons held an edge on pucks to the net, but the game was played evenly, with both goalies making key saves at key times to keep the score 0-0.
It was the same story in the second period, especially in the first half of the frame, as both Domenic Graham and Andrew D'Agostini stood tall and made some highlight reel saves on quality scoring chances.
It was the Gryphons who finally broke through with a goal in the second period, just past the midway point, when they finally beat Graham and found the back of the net.
The Gryphons added to their lead with just under five minutes left in the period, scoring on the power play a shift after the Lakers had a shorthanded breakaway, but couldn't bury the puck.
The Lakers did get on the board before the period ended, thanks to a pretty passing play.
Guillaume Naud started the player and got the puck to Mackenzie Keirstead who threw the puck to the net and thanks to a nifty tip-in from Erik Robichaud, the Lakers were within one late in the frame.
The second period wrapped up with the Gryphons leading 2-1 after another exciting 20 minutes.
Shots were 21-17 in favour of Guelph.
After a competitive and entertaining first two periods, the third didn't disappoint, with both teams looking to secure the victory and get back into the win column - both teams entered the game having dropped their last two constests.
About six minutes into the third, the Lakers had several great chances on the power play, including hitting the post, but were unable to even the game up.
Thanks to keeping the pressure up, the Lakers finally broke through and tied the game, as Colin Campbell banked a shot in off D'Agostini on a delayed penalty to knot things up at two.
The teams decided to play a little extra, as they went to double overtime when the Gryphons caught a break at one end, with the Lakers hitting the post before they turned it around and scored on a re-direction to take the extra point.
Guelph escaped with a 3-2 win and now Nipissing will have to regroup for their next game in 24 hours.
Nipissing is back in action Saturday night when they host the Western Mustangs at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Gardens.
