Highlight reel goals pace Warriors over Paladins
The Waterloo Warriors' newly-formed top line accounted for three of the team's four goals on Friday night against RMC, but the one they didn't score is the one that had everyone talking.
Mike Moffat (Waterloo) scored a goal-of-the-year candidate in the second period, and Colin Behenna (Waterloo) added a gorgeous goal of his own to go along with two assists, as the Warriors topped the RMC Paladins 4-2 on Friday night at the Columbia Icefield Arena in Waterloo.
Behenna's linemates Tommy Tsicos (Barrie) and Andrew Smith (Kitchener) each added a goal and an assist for the Warriors, who moved to a perfect 3-0-0 at home and 3-2-0 overall on the season. Chris Hurry (Summerland) made 31 saves for the victory.
Deric Boudreau scored both Paladins goals, as RMC fell to 1-4-1 on the year. Matt Murphy turned aside 34 shots for RMC, making a number of highlight-reel stops in a losing cause.
But the highlight that drew the most attention on the night was Moffat's marker. The defenceman jumped into the rush in the neutral zone, stickhandled through four Paladins, and went top shelf over Murphy's glove to tie the game at two.
The Warriors will now look to win consecutive games for the first time this season, as they host the Carleton Ravens on Saturday night. Puck drop is slated for 7pm at the Columbia Icefield Arena in Waterloo.

Petersen scores two in home opener win over Voyageurs
The York University Lions men's hockey team edged out a 2-0 win against the Laurentian Voyageurs in its home opener at Canlan Ice Sports on Friday evening (Oct. 23) to improve to 3-0-1 on the season.
Coming into the first period, possession slid back and forth between the two teams until the Lions opened the scoring early at 4:32. Stringing a few passes together, Mitch VanTeeling (Brandon, Man.) and Colton Vannucci (High River, Alta.) were able to find Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) by himself at the Voyageurs' crease and he wasted no time in smashing the puck past the gloves of Laurentian goaltender Alain Valiquette.
The pace seemed to pick up from there as the Voyageurs almost found the found the net seconds later as the puck slipped across the skates of York goaltender Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.). Luckily, no one was on the receiving end of the pass but it kept the Lions on their toes as they powered through the rest of the first period.
In the second period the Lions continued their momentum and completely dominated in the Voyageurs' end. Many Lions took promising shots on net (33 in total), but had a bit of a scare at 6:32 when Perugini stopped a critical Voyageur attempt off of an odd man rush that could have tied up the game.
Holding the 1-0 lead going into the third period, both teams had their chances to put another goal on the scoreboard. Connor Hale (Whitby, Ont.) almost executed off of a one-on-one situation against Valiquette, but it was Petersen who pounced on a power play opportunity and closed the game with a well-placed goal off of Vannucci's assist for the insurance goal.
The win has boosted the team to a first-place tie in the OUA West standings with seven points in four games.
Coming up next for the Lions is another home game against the Nipissing Lakers. Puck drop will be at 7pm on Saturday (Oct. 24).

Justin Sefton put Lakehead up 1-0 at 9:46 of the first period when he rifled one past Queen's goalie Kevin Bailie while the Wolves held the man-advantage, with Jake Ringuette and Billy Jenkins getting the assists.
Eric Ming dented the twine behind Lakehead netminder Jeff Bosch less than three minutes later to deadlock the score at 1-1 heading into the second.
Tyler Kunz put the Wolves up 2-1 at 8:21 of the middle frame after being set up by Jake Wright for the only goal of the period.
Eric Ming notched his second goal of the game with a shot that just snuck through Bosch's pads while the Gaels were on the power play to even the score at 2-2 just 2:48 into the third. Then with only 3:01 left on the clock, Jordan Coccimiglio went top shelf on Bosch from in close to give Queen's its first lead of the night.
Lakehead pulled Bosch for the extra attacker with just over a minute remaining in the game, but was unable to solve Bailie and the Gaels held on for the win.
Shots on goal for the game were 32-29 for Queen's and both goaltenders put up solid performances.
The Molson Three Stars of the game were:
1. Eric Ming, Queen's
2. Justin Sefton, Lakehead
3. Jordan Coccimiglio, Queen's
The two teams will hit the ice again for the rematch on Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens with the opening face-off set for 7:00.

No. 7 Lancers dominate visiting Ridgebacks
In game of a weekend doubleheader, the No. 7 Lancer men's hockey team defeated the visiting UOIT Ridgebacks 8-3 Friday night at South Windsor Arena.
With the win, the Lancers move to 4-0-1 on the season while the Ridgebacks fall to 2-3-0 heading into game two Saturday night.
UOIT wasted no time getting on the board scoring just 1:49 into regulation. Adam Campagnolo completed a play from Ryan Doucette and Jesse Stoughton to surprise the Lancers and give the visitors an early lead.
In a period that saw some great defense from both teams, the Lancers weren't able to tie up the game until 13:29 when Paul Bezzo scored his first of the year and send the game into the intermission tied at one.
Windsor exploded in the second period with four unanswered goals to hold a commanding 5-1 lead heading into the final period. Steve Anthony scored the second of Windsor's three power play goals just 1:49 into the middle frame to start the ball rolling.
Five minutes into the period, Dylan Sequin doubled the Lancer lead with his third of the season before Bezzo scored his second of the game off a pass from Kyle Haas less than two minutes later.
Eric Noel closed out the scoring in the second midway through the period with the Lancers second power play goal of the match, and his fourth of the year at 9:03.
The red light lit up even more in the third as the teams combined for five goals. Fighting off a penalty, the Ridgebacks came out in full force to score shorthanded with a goal from Ryan Doucette to cut the Windsor lead to 5-2.
Windsor retaliated with a pair of goals from Sebastian Beauregard and Brennan Feasey to restore their two goal lead. That wouldn't last long however, as Ben Blasko scored just seven seconds after Feasey to cut the Lancer lead again.
Kyle Hope scored his third of the season at 15:29 to close out the scoring.
Michael Doan made 24 saves in net to earn the win in net for the Lancers, while Brendan O'Neill made 18 saves through two periods and Ben Csiernik made 13 in the losing effort.

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team dropped a 3-2 double overtime decision to the No. 9 nationally ranked Western Mustangs on Friday night (Oct. 23) at Varsity Arena.
With the loss, the Blues drop to 2-2-1, while the Mustangs improve to 4-0-0 in the early goings of the season.
Tied 2-2 heading into double overtime, Western's Alex Micallef proved to be the game's hero, scoring on a 4-on-3 powerplay 1:37 into the double OT frame.
After a scoreless first period, third-year forward Dean Klomp broke the deadlock just 23 seconds into the second frame, intercepting a pass behind Western's net and wrapping it around to bounce the puck off the back of the Mustangs goalie and into the mesh.
The Mustangs evened the scoring 12 minutes later when Matt Marantz found the back of the net on the powerplay. The game was tied 1-1 after 40 minutes of action.
The Blues notched the go-ahead goal midway through the third period when Connor Cleverley finished off a nice play, assisted by Patrick Marsh and Charlie Connell; however, the Mustangs pulled their goalie with just under two minutes remaining and Marantz evened it up with 1:23 to go in regulation.
Blues netminder Michael Nishi posted 37 saves in the loss.
