WATERLOO, Ont. (January 7, 2015) – Christian Mroczkowski notched the game-winning goal with just 10 seconds left in the third period to give the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues on Thursday night to start off 2016.
Toronto got on the board first with a goal from forward Max Lindsay of Ancaster, Ont. A quick response from Laurier's leading goal scorer Derek Schoenmakers (Kitchener, Ont.) five minutes later, however, evened up the score for the remainder of the period.
Going into the second tied 1-1, the Blues and Hawks kept the fans on edge as each team found opportunities to take shots on goal. Toronto took the lead again, this goal coming off of the stick of forward Rusell Turner of Jasper, Alta.
In the final period and down by one goal on home ice, the Golden Hawks kept the pressure on the visitors from Toronto and it paid off as Will Cook of Port Stanley, Ont., buried a short handed goal past Blues netminder Andrew Hunt of Surrey, B.C., to tie the game 2-2.
With time winding down, the pressure on both teams to edge out their opponents with one final goal resulted in penalties on both sides. On a power play with only ten seconds left in the final period, Mroczkowski, a rookie forward from Wellesley, Ont., scored the game-winning goal to lift the Golden Hawks to a crucial victory.
The goal extends Mroczkowski's point streak to three games and gives him 10 points in 10 games this season.
Senior defenseman Matt Provost of Oakville, Ont., chipped in with two assists on the night while goalie Colin Furlong (Cambridge, Ont.) earned the win with 30 saves on 32 shots.
The victory was a crucial one for the purple and gold as they move two points clear of Toronto in the OUA West standings. The Hawks now sit tied for sixth in the division with the Waterloo Warriors as both teams have 16 points this season.
The Hawks (8-9-0) play again this Saturday at home as they host the Western Mustangs (10-7-0). Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
