Behenna, Smith pace Warriors over Stingers
Playing for the second time in less than 18 hours – with travel in between – the Waterloo Warriors likely had some weary minds and legs when they took on the Concordia Stingers on Saturday afternoon. But judging by the performance of Waterloo's top offensive duo, you wouldn't know it.
Colin Behenna (Waterloo) scored twice and added two assists, and Andrew Smith (Kitchener) pitched in with a pair of goals and a helper of his own, as the Warriors defeated Concordia 4-1 on Saturday Afternoon in Montreal.
The win takes the Warriors back to .500 at 4-4, and it snapped their two-game losing streak. Chris Hurry (Summerland), getting his fourth straight start in place of the injured Mike Morrison (Hamilton), made 21 saves in the victory.
Anthony Cortese scored the only goal for the Stingers in a losing cause. Goaltender Robin Billingham made 24 saves, as Concordia fell to 3-4-1 on the season.
After a scoreless opening period, the teams combined for only 10 shots on goal in the second. But two of those shots eluded Billingham: Behenna ripped one top-corner to open the scoring, and Smith poked one in on the doorstep to make it 2-0 Waterloo after 40 minutes.
In the third, Smith scored again to make it 3-0 before Cortese spoiled Hurry's shutout bid. Behenna salted it away with a short-handed empty-netter, rounding out the scoring on the afternoon.
The Warriors will now look for their first winning streak of the season when they travel down the 401 to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues next Friday night. The Warriors are back at home again a day later, when they welcome the Laurier Golden Hawks to the Columbia Icefield Arena.

Laurier defeated by No. 6 UQTR
MONTREAL, QC (October 31, 2015) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey team suffered their third consecutive loss on Saturday night as they fell 7-4 to the No. 6 UQTR Patriotes.
Laurier fell behind early in this game as the Patriotes staked themselves to a 3-0 lead through the opening 20 minutes.
UQTR would extend that lead in the second period and despite some life from the purple and gold in the final frame, it wasn't enough to close the gap on the nationally-ranked Patriotes.
Five different players found the back of the net for UQTR, highlighted by a two-goal afternoon from Guillaume Asselin of Quebec City. Teammates Anthony Verret of Roven France, Tommy Giroux of Quebec City, and Marc-Olivier Mimar of Quebec City, all finished the game with a goal and two assists.
For Laurier, Derek Schoenmakers of Kitchener, Ont., was the story in this game as he finished with a hat-trick, giving him five goals on the year.
Rookie Jordan Delaurier of Iroquois Falls, Ont., scored the Hawks other goal, his first as a member of the purple and gold.
Vinny Merante of Niagara Falls, N.Y., took the loss in this one for the Hawks as he allowed four goals on 26 shots before being replaced by Colin Furlong of Cambridge, Ont.
Sebastian Auger of St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, Que., earned the win making 16 saves for the Patriotes.
The Hawks (2-5-0) sit in 9th in the OUA West division, while the Patriotes (6-1-1) hold strong in second place in the OUA East division.
Next up for the Hawks is a game on Thursday, November 5th against the Ryerson Rams (5-2-0) on home ice. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.

Ravens drops 3-0 decision to Queen's
(OTTAWA, ON) — The Carleton Ravens men's hockey team suffered a 3-0 loss to the visiting Queen's Gaels on Saturday at the Carleton Ice House. Prolonged zone time and plenty of half-chances bore little fruit for the Ravens (4-3-0), who were swept on a weekend home stand for the first time since December of 2011.
"Tonight we competed hard, had more traffic and put more on net (than Friday)," said Ravens head coach Marty Johnston. "The guys worked hard — we've got to move on from this and get back to work on Monday."
In similar fashion to Friday night's 3-1 loss against UOIT, the Ravens found themselves largely stifled by a Queen's (5-1-0) team with good defensive structure and an efficient trap.
Both teams sat scoreless through the opening twenty minutes, as the Gaels' defensive game plan worked to perfection and Carleton failed to truly test Queen's netminder Kevin Bailie.
The Gaels capitalized on a Carleton pinch at 5:33 of the second period, as Darcy Greenaway beat Ravens goaltender Patrick Killeen (Corkery, ON) with a short-side wrist shot on a 2-on-1 break.
Greenaway's marker would ultimately stand up as Saturday's game-winner, with Bailie pitching a 38-save shutout between the pipes for the Gaels. Pat Downe would pick up a key insurance goal for the visitors from Kingston just 34 seconds into the final frame, and Shawn Boudreau wrapped things up with a late empty-netter.
"When teams come to play us, they're ready to go — our guys have to learn to handle that — we're seeing other teams' best every weekend," said Coach Johnston, whose Ravens team went 0-for-4 on the man advantage. "Our power play tonight looked better, but we mishandled pucks — we'll keep trying different guys until we find something that works."
Carleton will aim to get back on track next weekend with a pair of home games at the Ice House. The Brock Badgers (3-3-2) will pay a visit to the nation's capital on Friday night (Nov. 6), before a showdown with the York Lions (5-1-1) — one of the most improved teams in Canada — on Saturday (Nov. 7). Puckdrop for both is slated for 7 p.m.

Friday night, the Nipissing Lakers men's hockey likely deserved to beat the Guelph Gryphons.
While the Gryphons didn't get lucky, the Lakers outplayed them for large portions of the game, hits few posts and overall, had better chances to win.
Nipissing came up short and Saturday, they couldn't regain the form they showed Friday night and the Western Mustangs took advantage and topped the Lakers 5-1.
The first period set the tone for the Mustangs as they scored three goals, including two early on, just minutes apart, to grab a lead that was never in doubt.
Up 3-0 after 20 minutes, the powerful Mustangs didn't let up, adding two more goals in the middle frame to head to the final period holding a commanding 5-0 lead.
The shots, while favouring the Mustangs, weren't as lopsided as the score – 22-14 Western.
In the third, things got heated and physical between the two teams as they combined for 10 penalties and 20 minutes in the box, with the majority – all but one – being call for roughing.
Nipissing did manage to break local goaltender Greg Dodd's shutout, as Joel Herbet finished off a nice passing playing, roofing the puck over Dodds' glove hand.
Herbert drove the net and took a slick pass from Steven Deeg from behind the net to score the Lakers lone goal of the game.
Brock Morrison picked up the additional assist on the tally.
Domenic Graham played the first two periods for Nipissing, while Kirk Rafuse finished the game off in the third period.
The Lakers have now dropped four straight, including three in regulation and will look to get back on track with a road trip to the west, as they face Lakehead for a pair of games next weekend.

Lions top Varsity Blues for fifth win in seven games
The York University Lions men's hockey team defeated the cross-town rival University of Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday night (Oct. 31) by a score of 4-2 on home ice at Canlan Ice Sports.
The Lions controlled the game from the get go due in part to the early advantage of the Varsity Blues being called for delay of game as they were late to come out of the dressing room, sending the Lions on the power play. With the momentum from the early odd-man advantage, the Lions seemed to play with constant pressure in the opposing zone.
Seven minutes into the first period Derek Sheppard (Ajax, Ont.) broke into Varsity Blues territory and with an inside hesitation followed by an outside move, went bar down on Blues goaltender Brett Willows to break the scoreless game. Assists were from Tyler McGee (Timmins, Ont.) and Greg Milner (Watford, Ont.).
A few minutes after the Lions took the lead the Varsity Blues got on the board when a pass from the corner from Ryan Kirkup found its way onto the stick of Dean Klomp and he potted it past Chris Perugini (King City, Ont.) to tie the game up at ones.
The second period was played for the majority of the time in the Blues zone. After a U of T penalty the Lions looked to capitalize on the power play, and after only a few clicks off the penalty, Milner pounced on a rebound and poked it by the sprawled Willows to regain the lead at 2-1, which is how the second period ended.
The Lions and Varsity Blues both had a total of seven power plays on the night. As the Blues were down by one goal they threw everything they had at the Lions in the third, and eventually with five minutes remaining Charlie Connell received a pass in the slot which managed to sneak past Perugini to tie the game.
However, less than one minute after the equalizer, the trio of Justin Larson (Buckhorn, Ont.), Sheppard and Milner played the puck around from in close and Larson finished to give the Lions the lead once again.
The Lions took a boarding penalty later in the frame but managed to kill it off, followed by an empty net goal from Trevor Petersen (Thornhill, Ont.) with 16 seconds left on the clock to seal the game and improve to an impressive 5-1-1 on the season.
They will look to add to their win total on Friday night (Nov. 6) when the Lions take on the RMC Paladins in Kingston, Ont.

Voyageurs comeback falls short in 3-2 loss to Gryphons
The Laurentian Voyageurs came within inches of beating the defending Queens Cup Champion, the Guelph Gryphons, but fell short, losing 3-2.
Within two minutes of the game. play began to get rough. Jacob Smith left the game with concussion like symptoms after being hit into the boards. Laurentian received a five minute powerplay but could not get any momentum flowing.
Guelph was awarded their first powerplay and took full advantage. Nick Trecapelli took a shot from the point that bounced off the boards straight to the stick of Seth Swenson, who easily put it past a sprawling Alain Valiquette. 1-0 Guelph, eight minutes in.
Halfway through the second Swenson scored his second of the night on a wraparound. To add on top of a two goal differential, a second Laurentian player left the game due to injury. Nick Esposto took a stick to the face, left the ice with an open cut and did not return to the game.
Laurentian began to fight back with most of the play coming in the Gryphons zone. Daniel Pachis picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, skated down and entered it to Sebastien Leroux. He tipped it straight past Andrew D'Agostini's glove to put his team on the board with only ten minutes left in the game.
Guelph responded quickly as Michael Stevens put the puck to the front of the net where Cody Thompson snapped it past the glove of Valiquette. The Gryphons reinstated their two goals lead half way through the third.
Laurentian was given another opportunity as the Gryphons took another penalty. The Voyageurs decided to pull Valiquette in the final seconds of their powerplay. The sixth guy kept the man advantage going after the penalty expired. Blake Forslund made a cross crease pass to Brent Pederson who put it behind an outstretched D'Agostini. Laurentian brought the game within one with two and a half minutes left.
That was as close as the Voyageurs would get, putting everything they could to the net but D'Agostini would let nothing past him. The Voyageurs head back on the road as they take on the Windsor Lancers on Friday, November 6th at 7:30pm.
