KINGSTON, Ont. (January 27, 2015) - Darcy Greenaway (Wilton, Ont.) netted a hat-trick as the men's hockey team scored four unanswered goals to defeat the UOIT Ridgebacks 6-4 Tuesday night at the Memorial Centre.
The Gaels opened the scoring in the initial five minutes of the first frame as Andrew Wiebe (Thunder Bay, Ont.) netted his eighth of the season tipping in a point shot from Spencer Abraham (Campbellville, Ont.). Queen's added another to end the period as Greenaway deflected in his first of three on the night.
The Ridgebacks responded with four unanswered goals in the middle period to erase the Gaels lead and slow their momentum. Gaels goaltender Chris Clarke (Fall River, N.S.) relived starter Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) after the fourth UOIT goal. Queen's captain Corey Bureau (Amherstview, Ont.) added a powerplay tally in the final five minutes of the period to cut the deficit to one heading into the third frame as the Gaels hoped to spark a rally.
The Gaels completed the comeback as Ryan Bloom (Calgary) and Greenaway combined for three goals in three minutes in the final period to give Queen's the 6-4 victory.
Final shots for the night totalled 42-36 in favour of UOIT. Goaltender Bailie who had started in net for the Gaels before being pulled near the midpoint of the game, surrendered four goals on 25 shots. Clarke earned the victory after turning aside all 17 shots faced in relief. UOIT's Brendan O'Neill was charged with the 30 save loss.
The Gaels (10-12-1) return to action Saturday night as they are scheduled to travel to Sudbury, Ontario to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs (12-8-3).
