WATERLOO, Ont. (November 26, 2014) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men's hockey lost their second annual School Day Hockey Game on Wednesday morning as they fell 4-3 in an entertaining game in front of 2,931 fans at the Waterloo Recreation Complex.
One year after earning a 3-2 shootout victory over the Warriors in the first annual game, Waterloo returned the favour thanks to a strong second period. The Warriors got goals from former Golden Hawk Kain Allicock of Markham, Ont., and Andrew Smith of Kitchener, Ont., to stake them to a 2-1 advantage through 40 minutes.
The two teams would proceed to trade third period goals but a late flurry with the goaltender pulled by the Golden Hawks did not result in the tying goal as Waterloo came away with their fifth consecutive victory.
Allicock and Smith were difference makers in the contest for the Warriors as they both assisted on the game-winning goal from Brett Mackie of Whitby, Ont. Matt Kennedy of Oro Medonte, Ont., was the other Warrior to find the back of the net.
As for the Golden Hawks, they got goals from former Kitchener Ranger Zach Lorentz of Waterloo, Ont., Erik Pushka of Dugald, Man., and Luke Hietkamp of London, Ont. Hietkamp's goal came with just over a minute left in the third period and made for an exciting finish for the 20 different schools in attendance at the game.
Harrison Pharoah of Bracebridge, Ont., made his sixth OUA start for Laurier and was solid for the Hawks as he turned away 37 of the 41 shots he faced. Mike Morrison of Hamilton, earned the victory for Waterloo as he made 26 saves.
With the loss, Laurier falls to 5-9-0 on the season with three games remaining in their schedule before breaking for final exams. The purple and gold sit in a tie for seventh in the OUA West standings with 10 points.
Meanwhile, the Warriors improve to 9-6-1, good for third overall in the division.
Laurier returns to the ice this Saturday night when they head to Toronto to battle the Varsity Blues. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. at Varsity Arena and the game can be seen live on OUA.tv.
