Cowboy hats, line dancers, and the return of Kyle Blaney(Burlington, Ont.) were key to Ryerson's (11-7-1) impressive 8-4 win against the Brock Badgers (9-9-2) Thursday, as the Rams hosted their first Country Night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
It had been five games since Blaney laced up with his teammates, but his return couldn't have gone any better. The second-year center struck first for the Rams just over a minute into the game, with help from Domenic Alberga (Maple, Ont.) and Alex Basso (Toronto). Badgers forward Jordan Gignac would answer with a quick goal on Troy Passingham (Mississauga, Ont.), but the rest of the period would belong to the Rams.
"It feels good to be back," said Blaney following the victory. I'm happy to be back with all the guys, and playing everyday, but if we didn't have that hot start, the game could have easily gone the other way."
The Badgers sit just one spot below Ryerson in the OUA west division, with 20 points. The Rams clock in at 23 points with tonight's win.
The home team looked hot heading off the ice after the first 20 minutes of the match. Mitch Gallant (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) blasted his 10th of the season past Badgers goalie Clint Windsor early, followed by Blaney's second of the game.Lucas Froese (Grunthal, Man.) followed, putting away his sixth goal of the season off a pass from Blaney. Victor Terreri (Mississauga, Ont.) would make it 5-1 Rams going into the second period.
Despite switching goalies and scoring three in the second, the Badgers couldn't compete at Ryerson's amplified level. While Alberga put in his thirteenth of the season passed Adrian Volpe, Sam Blanchet (Laurier-Station, Que.) would follow with his first goal as a Ram.
Though he allowed four goals, Passingham made 29 saves in the win.
"Brock is a really good team so all the credit to Passingham, he's been unbelievable all year, and stellar again tonight," said Blaney.
