
Lancers open Queen's Cup defence with win over Gryphons
The Lancer men's hockey team kicked off the 2014-15 season with a hard earned 4-2 victory over the Geulph Gryphons on Wednesday night at South Windsor Arena.
The Lancer men's hockey team kicked off the 2014-15 season with a hard earned 4-2 victory over the Geulph Gryphons on Wednesday night at South Windsor Arena.
Spencer Pommells led the way for the Blue & Gold with 2 goals and an assist on the night, while rookie Dylan Denomme had a two point night that included his first OUA career goal. Parker Van Buskirk made 18 saves for the Lancers to earn the win in net.
The visiting Gryphons got on the board first just over the midway point of the opening period. Reilly O'Connor notched his first goal of the season off a pass from Will Cochrane and Teal Burns at 12:58 to put the visitors up by one heading into the second period.
In an intense middle frame that saw plenty of action in the penalty box, the Lancers tied it up on the power play with Pommells first of the game at 13:50 of the second.
The third period was a high scoring frame as the two teams combined for four goals in just twenty minutes. The Lancers took their first lead of the game at 7:18 when first year forward Matt Fuller scored his first OUA career goal. The Gryphons tied it up on the power play just four minutes later with a goal from Cochrane.
Windsor jumped ahead again at 14:41 on Denomme's first of the year and held on to take the victory. Pommells added an empty net insurance marker at 18:55 of the period.
The Lancers will now break from regular season action until October 10th when they travel to Waterloo to take on the Waterloo Warriors. They return home on Friday October 17th when they host the Laurier Golden Hawks at 7:30pm at South Windsor Arena.
